If you’re in peri-menopause or menopause and feeling exhausted, it’s tempting to put it all down to fluctuating hormones. Sometimes that’s true — but this life stage can also mask deficiencies that are well known to cause fatigue and “brain fog”.

The big three I see people overlook are vitamin B12, B-vitamin complex (especially folate and B6), and iron. These nutrients are key for making healthy red blood cells and supporting energy metabolism. When they’re low, the body may struggle to deliver oxygen efficiently — and fatigue can become relentless.

Common signs that can overlap with menopause:

persistent tiredness / poor stamina

brain fog, low mood, poor focus

headaches, paleness

breathlessness on exertion

restless legs

with B12: pins & needles or numbness

If this sounds familiar, it may be worth asking your GP about blood tests such as full blood count (FBC), ferritin/iron studies, B12 and folate (and thyroid checks if needed).

A couple of important notes:

Iron isn’t a “just in case” supplement — it’s best taken based on results.

Some people are more at risk for low B12 (e.g., vegan diets, gut absorption issues, or certain medications like metformin/acid-suppressing tablets).

Alongside medical checks, supporting stress, sleep and nervous system regulation can make a meaningful difference — reflexology can be a gentle, supportive option during this transition.

I'm continuing with my profiles on berries for the time being. This next one has a particular medicinal use.

Cranberries contain potent plant compounds called proanthocyanidins. These create a "slippery" effect inside the urinary tract, making it harder for bacteria — especially E. coli, the most common cause of cystitis, to cling to the bladder wall. Instead, the bacteria are more easily flushed out when you urinate.

They're also rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, giving your immune system a boost, while unsweetened cranberry juice helps keep you hydrated — and hydration itself is key to washing bacteria away.

But there is a catch: sweetened cranberry juice can actually do more harm than good. Added sugar feeds certain bacteria in the bladder, encouraging them to grow. For the best results, choose unsweetened juice, supplements, or — most effective of all — fresh-pressed cranberry juice. It may be very sour, but true herbal medicines often don't taste that nice, and fresh-pressed juice can be incredibly effective at getting rid of cystitis. This is so important as it can reduce reliance on antibiotics. With antibiotic resistance becoming an increasing problem, it's good to know that nature has an answer.

While we’re constantly encouraged to try exotic superfoods like acai and goji, few realise that one of the most medicinally powerful berries grows quietly in our own backyards. The humble blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum) contains some of the highest known concentrations of procyanidins, a group of flavonoids with well-documented biological activity.

Procyanidins are known to support cardiovascular health by improving endothelial function and enhancing microvascular tone. They exert potent anti-inflammatory effects, modulating cytokine responses and contributing to symptom relief in conditions such as arthritis and seasonal allergies. Their strong antioxidant activity helps protect tissues from oxidative damage, with emerging evidence suggesting benefits for cognitive function, ocular microcirculation, and metabolic resilience.

Unlike many imported berries whose effects are often overhyped and under-researched, blackcurrant offers a well-characterized phytochemical profile with consistent, clinically relevant outcomes. With its deep roots in both traditional medicine and modern phytotherapy, Ribes nigrum deserves a central place in any evidence-based botanical protocol.

Sometimes, the most powerful medicine is the one that’s been with us all along.

So pleased with my redcurrant plant this year!
Three years after planting, my urban redcurrant bush has finally yielded a large crop of berries! 🍒🌿

But did you know these gorgeous fruits are more than just tart and tasty?
Swipe through to see five science-backed reasons redcurrants deserve a spot in your garden—and your daily routine.**

Slide 1: **Immunity boost** 💪
Rich in vitamin C—just a handful supports your immune system and helps fight off infections.

Slide 2: **Anti-inflammatory power** 🔥
Their vibrant red colour comes from anthocyanins—natural antioxidants that help reduce inflammation in the body.

Slide 3: **Heart & blood health** 🫀
Redcurrants can help regulate blood pressure and protect your vessels, thanks to flavonoids like quercetin.

Slide 4: **Digestive support** 🍽️
A gentle laxative and digestive aid—ideal for gut health and metabolism.

Slide 5: **Backed by research** 📚
Recent studies even show redcurrant extract can help speed up recovery from viral infections like the common cold.

💡 Grown in a pot, on a patio, or tucked into a border—redcurrants are a small-space win with big benefits.

For Epilepsy Awareness Day, I'm spotlighting the powerful healing potential of Bacopa monnieri. 🌿 This remarkable plant, often found in India’s damp and marshy lands, is a revered nerve tonic in Ayurvedic medicine. It’s known for its traditional use in managing epilepsy and enhancing memory, learning, and cognitive function.

Native to India and Australia, Bacopa is a gift from nature. It is packed with active compounds like the saponins Bacoside A and B, which help support brain health and nervous system vitality. A small study even showed that an ethanolic extract of Bacopa reduced the frequency of epileptic fits in just 2-5 months, with some participants seeing complete elimination of seizures.

Beyond epilepsy, Bacopa is treasured for its ability to restore the nervous system after injury, stroke, or even emotional exhaustion. It’s a symbol of resilience and hope, reminding us of nature's healing power. 🌱
