For Epilepsy Awareness Day, I'm spotlighting the powerful healing potential of Bacopa monnieri. 🌿 This remarkable plant, often found in India’s damp and marshy lands, is a revered nerve tonic in Ayurvedic medicine. It’s known for its traditional use in managing epilepsy and enhancing memory, learning, and cognitive function.

Native to India and Australia, Bacopa is a gift from nature. It is packed with active compounds like the saponins Bacoside A and B, which help support brain health and nervous system vitality. A small study even showed that an ethanolic extract of Bacopa reduced the frequency of epileptic fits in just 2-5 months, with some participants seeing complete elimination of seizures.

Beyond epilepsy, Bacopa is treasured for its ability to restore the nervous system after injury, stroke, or even emotional exhaustion. It’s a symbol of resilience and hope, reminding us of nature's healing power. 🌱

Need an easy weekend brunch recipe? Cooking is one of my favourite things, so here is a foodie post! Now that I am in my nifty fifties, I must work on retaining muscle mass through strength training and diet. For me, this means increasing protein and decreasing carbs, so I give you my latest favourite brunch - edamame protein pancakes with smoked salmon and cream cheese. This recipe involves an egg, cottage cheese, and edamame beans whizzed in the Nutri Bullet, then with some fragrant herbs such as chives, mint, coriander, and flour mixed in to create a batter. Dollop the mixture into the pan to cook, and choose whatever topping you like! The pancakes are low in histamines, essential for my food histamine intolerance. Happy Sunday, friends!

A juicer has been among my best investments in the last few years. As my perimenopause has progressed, my stomach has grown increasingly sensitive, and chronic gastritis and food histamine intolerance have forced me to make changes to my diet. My morning coffee was one of the hardest things to give up. But I eventually found a great replacement—a potent shot of ginger juice blended with low-acidic vegetables such as carrot, green leaves, and cucumber. In the last three months, I have managed to turn my coffee routine into a fresh juice-gingershot routine instead, and there have been so many benefits, mainly because of the lump of ginger I am throwing into the juicer. Each morning, it quickly and effectively calms the inflammation in my stomach, reduces any achy joints, reduces the pelvic pain and headaches associated with my dodgy periods, and, thanks to its powerful circulatory effect, wakes me up and gives me energy far more effectively than a cup of coffee.

If you have a sensitive stomach, start with small amounts of ginger juice diluted with water to avoid any initial discomfort. Gradually increase the concentration as your body adjusts. If you don’t have a juicer, ginger tea is also great, although not as potent as juice extracts.

For a more detailed breakdown of ginger’s medicinal actions, please visit my post dated Feb 21st 2021.

A blast from the past - from my flute-playing days. Sound check at the Rainbow 2000 festival on Hakusan (Mount Haku), Japan in 1998. The guy behind me playing the shakuhachi flute is Hiroki Okano, . There was also a storm ridden gig on Mount Fugi on that tour! I only played my flute semi-professionally for a couple of years, as I hated being on stage. But whilst it lasted, it gave me extraordinary experiences around the world. I was only in my early twenties. What a ride 💜🙏🏼

Meadowsweet is truly a remarkable herb with so many incredible health benefits! From its powerful anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties to its antioxidant and antimicrobial effects, this herb is a real all-rounder in natural remedies. Its use for centuries in traditional medicine shows how valuable it is.

Meadowsweet, also known as Filipendula ulmaria, owes its medicinal effectiveness to a diverse range of bioactive compounds. Salicylates, particularly salicin, serve as primary active compounds in meadowsweet, displaying powerful anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. Additionally, the herb contains flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, which are recognised for their potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. The tannins present in meadowsweet contribute astringent properties, which prove beneficial in treating gastrointestinal issues, while phenolic acids and volatile oils further enhance their antimicrobial and healing properties.

The health benefits of meadowsweet are extensive and diverse. It offers effective anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, making it valuable in alleviating conditions such as arthritis, rheumatism, and headaches. Furthermore, its traditional use as a digestive aid is attributed to its astringent tannins, which soothe the gastrointestinal tract and relieve diarrhoea, acidity, and heartburn.

The herb's salicylates help reduce fever and associated symptoms, making it a useful remedy for colds, flu, and febrile illnesses.

Meadowsweet's antibacterial, antiviral, mild diuretic and detoxifying properties further contribute to its versatility as a natural remedy.

Its antioxidant attributes protect cells from oxidative damage, reducing the risk of chronic diseases. Moreover, meadowsweet's antiseptic and astringent properties make it an effective topical agent for promoting wound healing and skin health.

In modern medicine, meadowsweet is available in various forms tailored to medicinal applications. These include herbal teas and infusions, tinctures and extracts, topical preparations, and capsules and tablets, each offering distinct advantages. Meadowsweet continues to hold significant value in both traditional and modern herbal medicine. As ongoing research unveils its therapeutic potential, the herb is a versatile and effective natural remedy for many health concerns.

Leonurus cardiaca, commonly called motherwort, is a perennial herb belonging to the Lamiaceae family, known for its intricate history in traditional medicine. Originating from Central Asia and southeastern Europe, this herb has garnered significant attention for promoting women's health and overall well-being.

Motherwort is renowned for its diverse therapeutic properties, primarily attributed to its rich array of active constituents. The alkaloid leonurine and flavonoids, tannins, and iridoids contribute to its medicinal prowess, encompassing a broad spectrum of health benefits.

In historical contexts, motherwort has been extensively used for various health concerns. In ancient times, the Greeks and Romans revered it for its efficacy in addressing anxiety and heart conditions. Within European folk medicine, it was highly esteemed for its profound effects on women's reproductive health.

The beneficial impact of motherwort extends to cardiovascular health, where it exhibits mild sedative qualities and acts as a cardiotonic agent, fortifying heart function and ameliorating irregular heart rhythms. Additionally, western herbalists use motherwort with other plants for hyperthyroidism because of its action on the heart. Its application in gynaecological conditions demonstrates its efficacy in relieving menstrual discomfort, postpartum support, and mitigating menopausal symptoms.

The calming attributes of motherwort make it an effective remedy for managing anxiety and stress and supporting digestive well-being. Additionally, its traditional use in promoting liver health and detoxification underscores its holistic approach to wellness.

Various preparation methods are available for those seeking to harness the therapeutic potential of motherwort, including tea infusions, tinctures, capsules, and topical applications.
