Tonight’s Zoom topic was about bad habits & I wanted to share a little bit of what we went over, bc I feel like we all could benefit from learning about dealing with & fixing our bad habits (addict or not).
We all have bad habits, but as addicts we are more susceptible to gaining & struggling with bad habits due to ✨ INSTANT GRATIFICATION ✨.
If you think about it, a lot of bad habits give us that instant gratification that we all crave as addicts in recovery or active addiction.
For example, working is a good habit, but it takes time, effort, and dedication, whereas sitting & watching TV we get the instant gratification of relaxation, comfort, & entertainment.
Saving money is a good habit, but it’s hard & it takes self discipline, work to make money, & patience to get it saved up to where you want/need it to be, but spending freely gives us the instant gratification of new things.
& there is soo many other examples, but im curious if anyone else realizes how badly we craving that instant gratification? Do y’all have bad habits that you struggle with due to the gratification you get from them? Are you interested in replacing bad habits with good ones?
Here’s some examples of how to turn your bad habits to good habits-
-Recognize your bad habits (btw they aren’t character flaws- you aren’t lazy). Don’t keep yourself in denial of your bad habits.
-Realize your triggers. ex. if you are wanting to eat better but you struggle with figuring out meals at dinner time, which pushes you towards ordering fast food, you need to REALIZE that not having meals planned is a trigger. Plan ahead. Do what you can to avoid those triggers.
-ROUTINE!!! Add good habits into your schedule, make them a part of your routine. The more you make a good habit a priority & the more you do it, the easier it’ll become to do it daily (or more often).
-Reward yourself ✨ we all live for the good things in life, it’ll make the good habits seem so much easier if you reward yourself every once in a while & celebrate your success!
-Support, make your loved ones aware of your efforts to change your bad habits, ask them to help hold you accountable. Ex- find a gym buddie if you are wanting to exercise more.
-Be aware of bad habits that might form over time, don’t let them go once you notice them. The longer you let a bad habit go, the harder it’ll be to stop/change it.
-Set reminders, set alarms, post it notes, do whatever you can to remind yourself daily to add those good habits into your daily routine! Before you know it the good habits will come with ease & the bad habits will be out the window 🫶🏼
