Strawberry Coconut Collagen Oats

These overnight oats are so simple and nourishing. Full of satiating MCT’s, skin plumping / joint strengthening collagen, and hydrating, antioxidant rich berries.

The combination of protein & fat gives the oats a bit more lasting power whilst keeping that blood sugar steady & stable. This one’s for my mamas who don’t have the time and are in need of the most nourishment…

Blend one can full fat coconut milk with 2-3 cups of strawberries (local, if you can!) and a good glug of maple syrup (or sweetener of choice) and blend till smooth. Mix in 2-3 cups of oats and pop in the fridge for at least 6 hours! Top with extra berries or other in season fruits.

In TCM - and many other cultures - the first forty days postpartum are a sacred time for rest and nourishment. Ideally mothers spend much of their time in bed recovering whilst bonding with baby and nourishing their bodies with warming, grounding, easy to digest foods that replenish lost nutrients and fluids, fortify breast milk and promote healing.

In the United States this notion of rest and relaxation postpartum is somewhat of a phenomenon. Some women feel the urge / need to bounce back - to work, to their body, to their old self - while others are simply forgotten about while their newborns take center stage.

Regardless of where you fall on this spectrum remember that birth - even the most beautiful, empowering births - are still registered as major trauma by the body. And trauma needs attention, love, patience, and kindness.

One easy-ish way to grant yourself some love is by nourishing your body, even if everyone else has forgotten about it.

Fill your freezer with beautiful, nourishing meals, snacks and basics so that you can keep yourself and your baby fed, fueled and able 💫

Also, REST!!!!! You deserve it.

Nourishing morning bowls to balance blood sugar, increase energy, keep you satiated & get your gut going bc that Sunday morning coffee hinders all of the above.

Nourish bowls are an easy way to get everything you need in one easy meal. Pick a protein, fat, fiber & complex carb or starch & you are good to go.

While the combinations are endless I often default to a super easy, quick mix of:

Jasmine rice
Eggs cooked in grass fed butter or ghee
Sheep milk cheese
Avocado
& some herby greens

Easy!

In colder months cooling foods - like salads & smoothies - can dampen our digestive fire which governs our bodies ability to absorb, assimilate and digest nutrients. Instead of eliminating these beneficial, nutrient dense foods try adding some warmth to help establish balance ⚫️⚪️ here’s how:

Add warming herbs & spices to your foods. think: cinnamon, ginger, turmeric, garlic, chili, rosemary, black pepper, etc

Use room temperature fruits, veg & h20 in your smoothies. No need for ice & bonus points for seasonal produce

Pair salads with roasted elements like root veggies, slow cooked proteins, warmed goat cheese or a nice cup of broth

Chew your food! The longer you chew the easier your body is able to digest & assimilate nutrients, which means your body gets to work smarter not harder

Save cooling foods for later in the day when your digestive fire is at its peak, apposed to the early morning when your system is just beginning to wake

While every woman’s journey with breastfeeding is uniquely their own understanding how to nourish your body for optimal milk supply never hurt no one.

Start by eating beautiful REAL foods aka foods that grow out of the ground and don’t require any packaging. Eat often and in abundance. Variety is key. It’s so easy to get stuck in a rut of eating the same thing day in, and day out but our bodies (and our guts!) thrive off of DIVERSITY!

Drink your water!!!! Hydration is a key component to maintaining your milk flow. If you struggle with fluids try consuming your water via hydrating fruits and vegetables like watermelon, kiwi, leafy greens, etc.

Play around with galactogogue foods which are incredibly nourishing and versatile. Bake them into sweets, add them into savory pies, smoothies, salads, or eat them on their own!

Your body will tell you what’s working and what isn’t. Listen in!

Natural sugars replenish glycogen stores, which get used up during high intensity movement like exercise & BIRTH !!!!

If you’re looking for a healthy, functional snack to pack in your hospital bag consider some of natures candy in the form of fruit (fresh, dried, dehydrated), honey, molasses, & or maple syrup for quick, efficient energy.

& some more reasons you should be eating natural sugars:

🍒 the combination of fructose & fiber helps stabilize blood sugar, which keeps you full for longer

🍒 fructose provides fast stable energy

🍒 natural sugars are loaded with nutrients like vitamins, minerals & antioxidants

🍒 fructose helps with mineral retention & electrolyte loss

🍒 natural sugars curb sugar cravings from artificial sources

🍒 most forms of fructose are incredibly hydrating keeping you energized & able

26 weeks, waiting on another growth spurt 🌱

Mostly resigned to sweatpants & fine with it. Lots of meditating, cooking, eating, trying to sleep (pregnancy insomnia, help !!), gentle movement, internal work and trying not to go stir crazy in these weird times.

15 degrees! Warming foods on cold days help keep your internal temp steady and require less work from your body as they match your inner heat.

Warm your body with soups, stews, teas, lattes, slow cooked meats, roasted veggies, porridge & room temperature h2o.

Bonus points if you keep your neck area warm with a scarf or turtleneck. Our necks are considered a wind gate in Chinese medicine. Cool air on this area can exacerbate or bring on colds / sickness, so keep it warm & toasty my friends!

Fats nourish, fuel, protect & satiate our bodies throughout all their ebbing & flowing.

Society, diet trends, the food industry, etc love to demonize fat as bad for you, the cause of weight gain, high cholesterol, etc and whilst not all fat is created equal (fat from McDonalds French fries is v different than fat from beautiful olive oil) it is one of the foundations of a healthy meal / lifestyle.

A few benefits of eating good fats:

- improves heart health
- aids in hormone production
- strengthens immunity
- provides stable energy
- cell growth
- reduces “bad” cholesterol whilst increasing good cholesterol
- cushions joints / organs
- insulates the body from cold
- optimizes brain function & development
- improves mood & sleep
- helps regulate nervous system functioning
- helps absorb nutrients from food & supplements
- provides long term satiation

As always aim to eat fats from single ingredient sources - fish, grass fed butter, pasture raised meats, high quality oils (olive / coconut), yolks, tallow, avocado, nuts, seeds & avoid fats from highly processed “fast,” convenient foods

Instead of denying cravings I try to healthify them.

An easy way to do this is by making things at home apposed to ordering out. This way you can use quality ingredients and control what goes into your recipes and what doesn’t (like added sugar, salt, vegetable oils & preservatives which even the nicest, most high end restaurants use in abundance).

whole wheat pancake, zero refined sugar, pasture raised butter, backyard eggs, minimal ingredients & pure Vermont maple 🍁

Winter is a time for inner reflection, for rest, growth, rehabilitation, hibernation & deep thought.

Before you make a million NYE resolutions for yourself - 80% of which research has found result in failure / disappointment - remember to go easy, be gentle & lean into the seasons. Spring is for action. Til then, let your body & mind get some rest.

See you in the New Year !!
