The path to forgiveness

We reach forgiveness and peace walking through the dark forest of pain. We grieve. We acknowledge our loss and trauma. We accept that we were hurt. We process the betrayal we faced. We overcome the anger and the need for vengeance. We let go of guilt, shame, and fear. We develop assertiveness in the process. We take responsibility for our happiness. We seek to understand ourselves and others in this journey. We reassess and deal with our judgements and expectations. And finally we can reach a place where we can forgive others and ourselves. Sometimes you may need to forgive yourself, or a life situation or an event that has devastated you, before you can move on to a better place of peace and empowerment.

Western medicine, for decades, has treated the body to be a separate entity from the mind. It was assumed that diseases arise only from factors that could be explained using molecular, cellular and infectious medicine. Now evidence is increasingly pointing to an additional cause of many "physical" diseases, that is, factors that arise from our mind. This new understanding of origin of diseases is informed by concepts that are now covered by the term "Psychoneuroimmunoendocrinology" which tries to understand how our mind, brain, body, endocrine system (hormones) and immune system are all interconnected.

Dr. Gabor Maté has contributed immensely to our understanding of how stress and trauma contribute to a wide range of diseases. If you are not familiar with his work, you will find this an interesting introduction to these concepts.

A psychological therapist's work can be at times distressing, and is often more demanding emotionally compared to many other professions. This article by Dr. Arielle Schwartz discusses the prevention of burnout in therapists.

I quote: "The realities of working with trauma is that therapists sit with extreme and often debilitating experiences with our clients such as helplessness, hopelessness, despair, isolation, loneliness, injustice, unfairness, suffering, rage, and evil. Often clients have lost faith, and the meaning or purpose of life is put into question."

Breathwork originated thousands of years ago in India in the form of Pranayama. It has evolved over the centuries and in recent times, gained acceptance even in Western Medicine and International Psychology as a simple yet extremely powerful tool to manage stress, enhance physical health and achieve a heightened inner calm and resilience. Regular breathwork leads to an improvement in energy levels, mental peace, concentration, digestion, sleep, and chronic pain.

The session will be a gentle, guided introduction to some simple breathing exercises with an explanation of some differences between them, followed by emotional reflection and discussion. Often beginners find it difficult to do breathwork regularly, or to do it without mental distraction, or to do it alone. So in the initial phase, it is often preferable to do it as a group or individual therapy, guided by a facilitator. All participants are welcome to join future free sessions also (depending on available slots) or switch to individual, private sessions.

The participants will also be given a short printable guidance document after the session that will provide some tips for them to continue practicing on their own.

How can breath affect our body, it is just automatic, is it not? Does breathwork really improve our health? Is it all hocus pocus? Many people have these questions. Here is an excellent article written by Tanya J. Peterson NCC and reviewed by Dr. Naveed Saleh, MD, MS. A must read if you are new to breathwork or sceptical about its powers.

Breathwork involves intentionally controlling the way you breathe. Breathwork is a holistic, mind-body approach to mental health and well-being. It can be done simply and on your own, or it can be structured and part of a formal program. Its purpose is to directly influence your body’s inner worki...
