“When’s the right time to hire a doula?”

Whenever you decide you’d like to add that extra layer of support.

Some of our birth doulas book out months in advance, while others have last-minute openings.

The same goes for postpartum support — you can set it up before baby arrives or reach out once you’re already home.

There’s no “too late” to add a doula to your team.

Your birth, your postpartum, your timing, your team.

This week is Black Breastfeeding Week 🖤

The week was created to shine a light on the disparities in breastfeeding rates and the barriers to support that persist because of systemic racism and lack of representation in care.

As a community-based doula collective, we honor this week and remain committed to learning, listening, and working toward a future where every family has access to the support they need.

This explanation and sensible approach to initial weight loss in newborns is having such an impact.

This explanation and sensible approach to initial weight loss in newborns is having such an impact.

All babies lose some weight in the first 24 hours. If you received IV fluids during labour, your baby may lose even more, not because of feeding, but because the fluids make the birth weight look higher than it really is.

That’s why the 24-hour weight is the most accurate starting point for tracking growth.

Researchers in Canada found that using the 24-hour weight instead of the birth weight helped more babies stay exclusively breastfed in their first few days of life.

Growing well = getting enough milk. ❤️

Today, we celebrate the rainbow babies! The babies that come after the storm of perinatal loss: fertility losses, miscarriages, and infant loss. We at Compass Perinatal Peer Support have loved supporting families through the storms and seeing the beautiful rainbows in the end!

There are so many great questions to ask when you’re choosing a doula—but the most important one is:

“How do you support families in making decisions during labor and postpartum?”

This tells you so much about their style, philosophy, and whether their approach feels like the right fit for you.

Other good ones to ask:

- What are your ‘go-to’ comfort techniques when you notice your client is overwhelmed?

- How do you involve and support my partner?

-How do you navigate hospital staff and providers?

The right doula for you is the one who makes you feel safe, heard, and supported. 💫

✨Self-care doesn’t have to be big or fancy✨

During pregnancy and postpartum, one of the best ways to care for yourself is to pause and check in with your body. A few deep breaths, a glass of water, or a quiet moment with your feet up can make a huge difference. 💛

Remember: tending to your needs isn’t selfish—it’s essential. When you refill your cup, you create more space to meet the needs of your baby and family, too.

Doulas are here to help support you in your lactation goals.

✨ And some are Certified Lactation Counselors (CLCs), too! ✨

From the first latch to figuring out pumping, you’re not alone.

Every doula in our collective is trained to support you through your lactation journey—whether you’re breastfeeding, chestfeeding, combo feeding, exclusively pumping, or exclusively formula feeding.

We offer encouragement, hands-on tips, and emotional support when you need it most.

Looking for more in-depth help? Some of our doulas are also Certified Lactation Counselors (CLCs)!

What’s a CLC?

A CLC is a trained lactation professional who can help with:

• Painful latch

• Milk supply questions

• Pumping & bottle feeding

• Feeding plans for returning to work

• Emotional support through feeding challenges

A CLC is not a medical provider or IBCLC, but they are a fantastic first step for most lactation questions and concerns.

This World Breastfeeding Week, we’re reminding you:
You don’t have to figure this out alone.
