Sometimes it’s hard to define music therapy in a medical setting because we meet such a wide variety of needs. Sometimes it can look like “typical” music therapy AND sometimes I happily step outside of that box! Today we (along with our head of integrative services) were requested to clear the energy of my main unit. First, we broke up the energy through physical clapping with the staff, then we raised the vibrational frequency utilizing toning bells, singing bowls, chimes, and at times, vocal sounds. I love that no one batted an eyelash (at least that I saw 😂) and our staff set positive intentions and embraced mindfulness. Grateful to be part of a medical setting that values our services and is in tune to energy in the first place. 🙏🏼

Trying out the ukulele chord changer! I’ve used this tool with both adults and children to meet a wide variety of needs and goals.

In this example, we are looking to support fine and gross motor skills (our rockstar in this video has cerebral palsy which impacts the right side of her body). The ukulele changer allows her feel control with one finger at a time while creating successful chords and musical sounds. Along with this, she is also uniquely experiencing both sides of her body working together in tandem, plus additional physical and cognitive benefits. Music is a great way to work on skills such as these because it’s a natural motivator. My favorite part of all of this is her smile though! If you have questions feel free to comment or DM me.

Hey there! It's update time! I realize I haven’t been as active as I intended to be since starting this account, but for good reason! I accepted a position recently as a Medical Music Therapist working in my local hospital’s Cancer Canter. It’s been a beautiful whirlwind of adjusting to a new unit, learning lots of new songs, as well as completing my last summer of Graduate classes (woohoo!) Thanks for hanging in with me on this music therapy journey. Stay tuned and reach out if you are interested in trying Music Therapy for you or a loved one! I have a few slots open for private sessions. 💗🎶

Is music teletherapy as effective as in-person sessions? Yes! In fact, they can be even more effective for some individuals.

🎸 Being able to experience therapy in the comfort of a chosen space makes it easily accessible (and comfortable) anytime, anywhere. This method can also help therapeutic activities translate easily into your everyday life, especially if sessions are taking place in the home, with materials/instruments that are kept in the home already.

➡️ PLUS, with music therapy trainings and classes having gone virtual during the pandemic, music therapists created and learned how to utilize many online music making platforms! Virtual sessions can be creative, exciting, and fun, with clients and therapists even being able to share screens on some of these platforms in real-time. From creating beats and original songs, to learning instruments through adaptive lessons, music teletherapy can be very enjoyable and effective!

Hello 👋 to our new followers! Let's kick things off with our most asked question: "What is music therapy?" The easiest way to describe this service is that we use music as a tool to achieve non-musical goals, whether they be of physical, emotional, and/or cognitive nature. You can come to music therapy as you are, without any prior musical knowledge, and we will create fun, interesting, and motivating session plans customized to your needs.

Some examples of goals that we might work on could be: fine and gross motor development, increased social skills, and supporting anxiety reduction. As a healthcare profession that requires board-certification, we are able to use music as an effective motivator to support our clients in the area that needs the most focus.
