The Thomas Lloyd who died in 1740 in Isle of Wight County Virginia, if he was indeed the son of Thomas Lloyd and his mulatto servant Ann Redman, then he would have been light skin but darker than the average European person because of his mother’s complexion. If this is the case as I have raised in my Genealogy Research efforts then it’s huge news In genealogy circles.

So when Edward Mozingo became free in 1672, he would have went to the Lloyd plantation and there he met Jane Redman, servant to the Lloyd’s, this interaction resulted in the birth of Ann Redman. The question now is did Edward know he fathered Ann? Because where was he between 1672 and 1681 when he became a tenant on Boyer’s land? Boyer already had dealings with William Lloyd. So did Edward become a tenant of Boyer through the Lloyd’s? Since Ann never acknowledged who her father was in the 1697 court record, I don’t think she knew him and that means Edward likely didn’t stick around to raise her at least partially. So he probably didn’t know she was born. But the question remains, where was he between those “lost” years of 1672 to 1681? He married Margaret Bayley before 1686. Then he and Margaret had 3 sons together!

Silhouette: the fact that Edward Mozingo lived in close proximity to the Lloyd land tells me of a connection and my hypothesis is that he went to Lloyd’s once he became free in 1672. There he met Jane Redman. He then went on his way and Jane gave birth to Ann Redman the mulatto servant of the Lloyd’s. In my opinion Edward would be the only true candidate to being the father because it all lines up. The servants from surrounding plantations must of mingled with each other.

Here’s something interesting, Edward Mozingo lived on Pantico Run and the Lloyd’s had land close by, both east side of Cat Point Creek or by its previous name Rappahannock creek. It’s totally possible that Edward went to the Lloyd plantation once he became a free man in 1672. He would have met Jane Redman another servant, then she gave birth to Ann sometime after and most likely unknowingly to Edward. Ann was brought up with the Lloyd’s and eventually took Thomas Lloyd to court, she became free in 1697. I believe she gave birth to my 7th great grandfather Thomas Lloyd possibly around 1695. Ann never married the father but I believe she took the Lloyd name and died in 1718!

I have come upon an epiphany in regards to my descent from Edward Mozingo and Ann Redman his daughter. Since I am getting DNA hits on the Hill’s in Virginia it’s from Mary and the only way this is possible is that I’m from Thomas her son. Thomas was not married but he fathered his son Thomas with the Mulatto servant Ann Redman. I have followed all the clues to realize this. Ann’s true only candidate for her father is Edward Mozingo, the African servant freed in the 1670’s. Edward is my 9th great grandfather!

Ann Redman ran away from the Lloyd plantation in February of 1696 and John Thacker was born a year later. She stayed at Edwin’s for about 20 months or enough time to get pregnant by Edwin and gave birth to John. The birth was registered and Frances Daingerfield listed as the mother, that’s Edwin’s wife. Why would I get DNA matches on this Thacker family, it means Ann is my ancestor through my Lloyd’s. -Shawn Vernon Lloyd

The family of Ann Redman: father Edward Mozingo and mother Jane Redman. Ann didn’t marry but my theory is she is the mother of my 7th great grandfather Thomas Lloyd and John Thacker. She had Thomas by her “master” Thomas Lloyd and John by Edwin Thacker. This is my belief based on records and DNA. -Shawn Vernon Lloyd

I believe Ann Redman to be my 8th great grandmother, mother to Thomas Lloyd who died in 1740 in Isle Of Wight County Virginia. Ann died in 1718, her father is Edward Mozingo!

I wanna point out that Ann Redman might not be an ancestor for several people of Redman Ancestry in Virginia. There’s a line that has a Christian Redman born 1715 that claims descent from Ann but I’m not sure how accurate that is. For one, Ann would have been around 42 years old when this Christian was born. Also, apparently this line has a John Redman who died in Hardy Virginia in 1836. The problem with this is this John Redman was a African American man and no one knows who his father was. Also, the TV host Henry Louis Gates descends from this John Redman. I am convinced based on the records I have found and the DNA that Ann Redman bore a child by Thomas Lloyd and also had a child by Edwin Thacker. According to the court record Ann ran away from the Lloyd plantation in February of 1696, was at the home of Edwin for a long time, enough time to get pregnant and give birth to who I believe can only be John Thacker born in 1697. So from this I believe those are at least 2 children of Ann’s. I‘m not sure there’s documentation of Ann having children with the Redman name, so how could there be Redman’s who descend from her. I’m not ruling out the possibility of it happening, just saying I have done my own research and so far I have found 2 potential lineages from Ann, my Lloyd’s and Thacker’s!

Happy anniversary of Edward Mozingo gaining his freedom on Oct 5th 1672. Then on Oct 7th 1697 Ann Redman won her freedom, similar to her father Edward. Edward never married Jane but I believe he possibly unknowingly fathered Ann then he went on to marry Margaret Bayley and have children. Edward is a prime candidate to be Ann’s father. We know Jane was a servant, an English woman living on the Lloyd plantation, likewise Edward was a servant to John Walker. These events in their lives took place in what would be Richmond County Virginia, formed in 1692. My DNA points to this as the true story of Ann Redman, so does the records!

This court record proves that Joshua Lawson had land near Lt Col William Lloyd. This also sets up the narrative that Ann Redman became Ann Lloyd, since Ann was a servant to the Lloyd’s and this Ann was a servant to Joshua Lawson. It shows a connection and that may very well prove my theory supported by DNA, that Ann is my 8th great grandmother! 🕵️‍♂️🌳🧬
