Consider all the advice you have seen online or received from loved ones and instantly rejected it from a deep sense of knowing that, “it’s not for you.” The therapeutic relationship is the X factor and the chessboard. You can play all you want with the pieces but without the board, none of it makes sense. ⁣⁣

I keep this photo close by from when I was a little girl. It’s a daily reminder to take care of the little girl that still lives inside of me and still needs me. It is also my favorite homework to give my clients. They’re often amazed at how quickly the emotions move through them when they meet their younger self and tell them the words that they have been longing to hear. You know yourself best. You know what hurts. You know what you’ve needed. It can come from you. Whatever your situation was with your mother, learn to self mother. It will be one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself. 💛⁣

✨May is Mental Health Awareness Month!✨⁣

This is a notice to remind you that there is no cure for being human. ⁣

That mental health isn’t static. ⁣

That symptoms can be viewed as an invitation or a cue of some unprocessed or unmet need that wants your attention. ⁣

That we are capable of self healing. ⁣

That therapy can be a container creating conditions for deeper understanding. ⁣

That you are worth and deserving of the life that you want. ⁣

All jokes aside, a bad apology is something common to us all. I’ve given and received my fair share of crappy apologies and have come to terms with the fact that a good apology can only be offered once you’re nervous system has calmed. Here you can construct an apology that actually threads then needle. Try your hand at some of the ideas below and listen or read anything Harriet Lerner puts out on the subject. ⁣

The anatomy of a good apology:⁣

• Stay quiet and soothe your nervous system.⁣
• Consider asking for some time to digest what has been shared. ⁣
• Express sympathy/empathy for their pain, (e.g. I’m sorry you’re hurting. I’m sorry I hurt you.)⁣
• Pause and ask them if there’s more they want to say. Generally when the other person feels like you’re in a safe place to listen based on the above behaviors they’ll have more to share. ⁣
• Repeat the above steps until they say they’re complete. ⁣
• Offer empathy or validation (e.g. It makes sense to me that you feel this way. I understand why you feel this way.)⁣
• Apologize for something you can own or be accountable for even if you can only say I’m sorry I’ve hurt you again. ⁣

There’s a lot more than can be expressed here but this will get you off to a good start. Anything is better than what is written in these images. ⁣

Always remember that no hurt party cares about your explanation or your intentions until they feel heard!⁣

* Identify a mantra that speaks to your desire. The sentence ideally begins with “I am” or “I will.”⁣
* Write it down⁣
* Incorporate a ritual while repeating this mantra (e.g. light a candle, hand over heart, face the sun or moon while repeating, sit in meditative pose, etc.)⁣
* Invoke the intention and ritual daily at the same time each day. ⁣

Intentions are generally rooted in values so having a clear understanding of your values is an important prerequisite for any deep work. But the above words invoke the values of spring so use them as a jumping off point for how you can show up for yourself this season!🌞🌱🌸⁣

✨Weekend Inspo✨⁣

I heard an interview from Richard Schwartz (The founder of Internal Family Systems) describe a therapist’s role as a “Hope Merchant.” No job description has felt more accurate. We can and will hold hope and faith for you when you can’t. But my hope isn’t based on a wing and a prayer. Rather, it’s based on concrete data collected from logging over 30,000 therapy hours with clients.⁣

So trust us. We’ve seen the endings. Hang in there a little longer. No feeling is final. It gets better, we promise. Also, side note, (as a business owner since 2008) the 5 year rule really is also true. ⁣
⁣..Finally when you finish season 8, episode 3 - listen to us when we ask you to consider that this might have been “just the sort of closure that you were looking for”, and let’s find you a new show. ⁣

Favorite recent binges? We blazed through Wanda Vision and now I’m on a hunt for a new show!⁣
