Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome😮❤

(TTTS) is a rare condition that occurs only in identical twins while they are in the womb.

TTTS occurs when the blood supply of one twin moves to the other the shared placenta. The twin that loses the blood is called the donor twin. The twin that receives the blood is called the recipient twin.

Both infants may have problems depending on how much blood is passed from one to the other. The donor twin may have too little blood, and the other may have too much blood.

Most of the time, the donor twin is smaller than the other twin at birth. The infant often has anemia, is dehydrated, and looks pale.

The recipient twin is born larger, with redness too the skin, too much blood, and higher blood pressure. The twin that gets too much blood may develop cardiac failure because of the high blood volume. The infant may also need medicine to strengthen heart function.

The unequal size of identical twins is referred to as discordant twins.

A temporary burn pattern on the back of a lucky lightning-strike survivor 😮

These patterns are recognized by forensic pathologists as clear evidence that a victim has been struck by lightning and the 'tattoo' - although short-lived, normally just for a day or two - is caused by physical damage to capillaries under the skin.

Medical terms for this phenomenon include arborescent lightning burn, arborescent (tree-like) erythema, keraunographic markings, or ferning patterns.

Interesting toe deformity including the corresponding x-ray! 😮

This is an example of preaxial polydactyly, thus the development of additional toes or fingers.

Polydactyly occurs when the body follows a different set of directions than usual while forming the hands or feet during development. Researchers are still learning about all the genes that cause extra digits.

The trait may be passed down in families as an isolated, benign condition, like having a hitchhiker's thumb or being double jointed. This is considered a non-syndromic anomaly. Alternatively, the trait may exist as part of a syndrome, which is a group of several recognizable clinical features that often occur together.

Some syndromes that might present with polydactyly include Greig Cephalopolysyndactyly Syndrome (GCPS) or Bardet-Biedl Syndrome (BBS).
