Each year, more than 700,000 people lose their lives to su***de according to the World Health Association. Not only is this a public health issue, but a personal issue in our very community. There are probably many of us who know someone that we have lost to su***de or struggled with suicidal thoughts. There are probably people in our community who have in some way been affected by su***de, but we do not know it. Today serves as a day to honor and remember those who have been lost as well as a reminder for our call as a community to lift up our brothers and sisters who are struggling. May we remember this day as one that sobers us deeply of the reality of this broken world as well as a day to spread hope throughout our community.
..

Our goal as Peer Support is to raise awareness and compassion for those who may be struggling with mental health related issues of any kind, and we ask you to join this initiative in your day-to-day lives. Su***de prevention is a sobering topic, a highly stigmatized one at that, but the real change cannot take place if the conversation only lasts for one day out of the year. If you know someone who is struggling, have compassion and a listening ear. Sometimes the best thing you can offer someone is emotional support instead of rationalizing a solution. If you are struggling, be kind to yourself and don't be afraid to ask for help. It is not selfish to be selfish, and you are worth far more than you could ever imagine.
"Certainly there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off." ~Proverbs 23:18 ESV
..

If you are someone or know someone who is struggling with suicidal thoughts or any other mental health related issues, please contact the Counseling Center at (724)458-2000 or the National Su***de Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. In the case of an emergency, please contact 911.

This week we’re talking about love and loneliness, something that I think is super important to be open about as college students. So stop bye and bring a friend; we’d love to see you!
