Nausea, vomiting, incapacitated and/or stomachaches – Has this hit you lately? 😣
Then you've probably experienced dumping! 👇
Most dumping episodes happen when sugary and/or fatty foods are "dumped" directly from the stomach into the small intestine without it being sufficiently processed.
Dumping is most common among gastric bypass surgery, but even those who have undergone gastric sleeve sometimes describe similar feelings.
There are two types of dumping syndrome: early and late.
⏳ Early dumping occurs 10-30 minutes after a meal. With early dumping, what you have eaten is quickly "dumped" into your gut. To compensate for this, the body reacts with the intestines sensing that the intestinal contents are too concentrated which releases intestinal hormones. Your body reacts by moving fluid circulating in the bloodstream to the inside of your gut. As a result, your intestines become full and bloated. Diarrhea often occurs 30 to 60 minutes later. In addition, certain substances are released from the intestine that affects the heart rate and blood pressure, causing many of the symptoms of early dumping.
⌛️ Late dumping occurs 1-3 hours after meals and is caused by different mechanisms. It is not due to food/drink going down the gut too quickly but to the increased and rapid uptake of glucose in the gut which produces a rapid blood sugar response and triggers a disproportionate release of insulin and a lower response to counter-regulatory hormones. This later results in low blood sugar which causes physical symptoms.
