*NEW RESEARCH*

In a recently published medical article entitled "Pollution and endometriosis: A deep dive into the environmental impacts on women's health", Alexandre Vallée and his colleagues review the accumulating research that is pointing to the fact that chemical contamination of our air and water systems is problematic for women's reproductive health. They note that pollution can provoke inflammation, oxidative stress and hormonal imbalances - all of which are implicated in the development and/or progression of endometriosis.

On an individual level, you and I can't change the pollution in our environment but there are many ways we can avoid its effects using advanced filtration systems. These are worth adopting to protect your health and that of your future families!

If you ever worried about becoming a mother because you weren't one of those women who naturally loved babies, here's some research to reassure you.

An article published just this month found that in animal models, the brains of the pregnant mother were physiologically changed during pregnancy to make them more maternal in their behaviours. And on the flip side, if they blocked this change, the females exhibited no interest in babies!

We've always known there were changes that happened to bond mothers and babies, but often thought it happened at the time of delivery with a flood or hormones. This study was interesting because it suggests that these changes happen earlier on in pregnancy and are perhaps more permanent.

Every year I go on a 3 day silent retreat. It’s a really important time for me to get away from the busyness of daily life and step back and evaluate how life is going.

Part of that time always involves roaming around the beautiful property I stay at. This year, they had had some crazy summer storms and I was quite taken by the massive trees that has been uprooted.

The roots of these trees tell a story that is similar to ours. When the roots are strong, the tree can flourish. And while every tree eventually dies, just as we too will all die, there were way fewer of these deeply rooted trees toppled compared to the smaller, skinnier less robust ones.

Our health is the same, and in so many ways, good nutrition is the foundation. A well nourished body is less susceptible to illness, more resilient in the face of external stressors and well prepared for procreation.

So while it’s easy to look around at people who seem to eat whatever they want and still be healthy, it is these deep roots that will prepare us for long term health and wellness.

I’m pretty intentional about how we eat in our family.

To help teach them about healthy eating, we talk about always/sometimes/rarely and never foods. This is one of our regular “treats”. They’re pretty good and the xylitol in them may actually be beneficial for dental health. There’s a few companies that make xylitol-sweetened gum & mints - we’ve tried Pur, Spry and Xylo and have liked them all 😋

TLDR: If your dishwasher pods or rinse aid have alcohol ethoxylates in them, they may be damaging your gut!

A recent study looked at the impact of various ingredients in dishwasher detergents and rinse aids on cellular health.
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0091674922014774

You can get exposed to dishwasher chemicals in 2 different ways:
🍽They get into the air. Have you ever walked by your dishwasher while it was running and smelled the soap? Or inhaled the big cloud of steam that come out when you open your dishwasher if it's still hot? If so, you're breathing in the things you're smelling.

🍽 Most detergents will leave behind some residue on your dishes which can they get into the food you eat.... mmmtasty?

This study particularly noted that it was alcohol ethoxylates which were concerning. These are often added to detergents because they help with foaming and de-greasing. If you're checking out your detergent, look for ingredients that have the words "alcohol" and "ethoxylate" close together.

For instance, one "natural" detergent I saw had "12-14 alcohols ethoxylated propoxylated" listed. In light of this study, this seems best traded in for something that doesn't contain these ingredients.

And fortunately, they do exist!

The solution I've been using is
👉 Bio-vert dishwasher tabs

They are one of the few "natural" dishwasher detergents I've found that work extremely well, and don't contain these potentially harmful ingredients.

Gut health is incredibly important to overall health, so regularly taking small steps like this can make a significant difference in the long run.

The increased prevalence of many chronic inflammatory diseases linked to gut epithelial barrier leakiness has prompted us to investigate the role of e…

PER FLOUROALKYL SUBSTANCES
aka PFAS

🔥 This subject is (finally) heating up 🔥

We have LONG had compelling evidence of the harms of these chemicals (used very broadly in non-stick/water resistant/stain resistant items).

In the US, there are currently numerous large law suits, rivalling those against to***co companies back in the day, as a story of intentional non-disclosure continues to emerge. The production companies knew these chemicals were harmful, and yet continued to mass produce them, putting the health of innumerable people at risk.

Unfortunately, suspected effects on fertility are huge amongst the risks
👉 decreased fertility
👉 high blood pressure during pregnancy
👉 developmental delays in children
👉 hormonal disruption

The most important thing you can do now is to identify where you are being exposed to these chemicals on a regular basis and eliminate those sources.

2 links for you

1. Info to help you determine sources of exposure
https://www.ewg.org/what-are-pfas-chemicals

2. The broader story of how these chemicals have become such a widespread problem. The similarities to big To***co are impossible to miss 😔

South Carolina researchers detected toxic PFAS in the ovaries of 36 women at a fertility clinic. Did those women have a right to know their own chemical exposure?
