Probiotics & Antibiotics - Can They Work Together?
So many pet pawrents ask us:
"Should I wait until the antibiotics are finished before starting probiotics?"
The answer: Do BOTH!
Here’s how ⬇️
During antibiotics:
✔️ Give probiotics 1–2 hours apart → helps reduce tummy upsets + keeps some “good guys” alive.
After antibiotics:
✔️ Continue probiotics for at least 2–4 weeks → helps reseed the gut and repair the microbiome for long-term health.

💡 On a Budget? (Aren't We All?) Try These Gentle Food Boosters:
🥄 A spoon of plain, unsweetened yoghurt (if dairy-tolerant)
🥄 A splash of unsweetened coconut kefir (no xylitol, ever!)
🥄 A drizzle of sauerkraut juice (just the liquid, not the salty cabbage)

These everyday foods can naturally top up the “good bugs” in your pet’s gut.

🌱 Think of probiotics like planting seeds… some may not sprout during the storm 🌧️, but plenty will thrive once the skies clear ☀️.

Supporting the gut = supporting recovery + boosting immune health 🐶🐱

Did you know your dog’s brain literally lights up when they smell you… kind of like a human falling in love?
In a classic fMRI study, scientists found that when pups sniff their favourite human, their caudate nucleus - the “reward centre” of the brain - fires up with joy, even more than when smelling other dogs (National Geographic, ScienceDaily).
And here’s a fresh twist: researchers recently discovered that a dog’s age and head shape change how their brain wiring connects to smell. Younger pups and long-nosed breeds have extra-strong scent pathways - so some dogs are biologically built to put you first (biologia.elte.hu).
Your scent = their emotional favourite.
Because calm - and that tail-wagging happiness - always begins in the nose.

Apple-a-Day?
Sweet, crisp, and hydrating, apple slices can be a pawsome treat for most dogs and maybe even some fruit-loving cats.

Why we love them:
🍎 Vitamin C to support immune health
🍎 Fibre to help digestion
🍎 Crunch factor pets enjoy (yes, some cats surprise us!)

Pet Parent Tip: Always remove the seeds and core - they contain cyanogenic compounds that can be harmful in large amounts. Offer in thin slices, as an occasional treat, not a diet staple.
Because sometimes the best treats are hiding right in your fruit bowl. 🐾

Did you know your cat is basically a tiny, furry physiotherapist?
A cat’s purr vibrates at 25–150 Hz – a frequency linked to healing bones and tissues.

So next time your kitty curls up and purrs, they might be doing more than just loving you … they could be fixing you. 💛

Skin looking dry or flaky (not yours, your pup's!)

Environmental factors and nutritional gaps can leave your dog’s skin dry and itchy, but a few simple tweaks can help.

Top tip: Add omega-3 fats and skin-loving oils to meals.

For a 10 kg dog, try:

Cooked or tinned salmon or sardines (in springwater): 20–30 g daily

Algae or fish oil supplements: 500 mg of combined EPA + DHA daily

A drizzle (1 tsp) of extra virgin olive oil for extra skin support

Healthy fats help nourish the skin barrier from the inside out, reducing dryness and irritation naturally. Read the full blog and references here: https://tinyurl.com/2tefe3ws

😺 Did you know? Cats’ saliva doesn’t have the same bacteria-fighting enzymes as dogs’ saliva? That means cats are less able to naturally control bacteria in their mouths, which is why dental disease is so common, affecting up to 70–80% of cats by the age of three (Ingham et al., 2001).

Because they’re not natural chewers either, plaque and tartar can build up quickly. This can lead to gum inflammation, bad breath, and even painful tooth resorption, often before we notice anything.

✨ But the good news? Gentle, food-first strategies (such as a sprinkle of turmeric, cat-safe chews, probiotics, and omega-3s) can help protect your cat’s gums and teeth long before problems arise.

Bum dragging? Itchy ears? Breath that could knock out a tradie?
Turns out, your dog’s gut might be behind it all.

At Pawsome Naturals, we’re all about getting to the bottom of things - literally. Our latest blog sniffs out the not-so-obvious signs of gut drama in dogs and what you can do (naturally) to sort it out.
Spoiler: it involves chia, pumpkin, and a few superstar fibres that keep things, well … moving.
