A little over 2 years ago, we started this campaign with the simple goal of shining a light on the realities of mental health and illnesses. Since then, we have shared 57 stories and raised $700 for CMHA National / ACSM National, all thanks to you.

We are so proud of how far we have come and have decided that it is now time to close out the Behind My Mind campaign. Our website and Instagram page will remain visible so that our stories can still be shared and read. However, we will no longer be active as a campaign and our RedBubble store will no longer be transferring proceeds to CMHA. If you would like to make a final donation, please visit our CMHA donation page: https://cmha.donordrive.com/campaign/Behind-My-Mind

Thank you to the brave individuals who have opened up to this community and shared their stories. Thank you to our readers and followers who have continued to support this campaign. And finally, thank you to our team members who have worked so hard to keep this campaign alive. This campaign would not have been a success without each and every one of you.

Although we have definitely helped raise awareness amongst our online community, we hope that you continue to advocate for mental health and wellness in your own communities as well. Take the time to check in with your friends, family, neighbours, even strangers. You never know what’s going on behind someone’s mind 💚

Dealing with burnout can be tough, and it can be more difficult when you still have more work to get done. In collaboration with , we would like to share our “Burnout Tool Kit”: strategies that we personally use when it is difficult to complete tasks because we feel tired or burnt out. We hope that this can help you get through any obstacles standing in your way and remind you to be proud of all the work you have accomplished.

Everyone has their own “tool kit” of strategies that work best for them, and we hope this post can help you find and collect helpful tools for times that you feel burnt out. What helps YOU when you feel burnt out?

These are short-term strategies only, and burnout can affect you for longer periods of time. Reach out to friends, family, advisors, counsellors, or other mental health supports to help you find longer-term solutions for dealing with burnout. Behind Cheyenne's Mind . . .

"I thought it was something I was dealing with on my own." Dr. Cheyenne Matinnia is a Clinical Pharmacist in Toronto who completed her Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) at the University of Toronto Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy and her Pharmacy Residency at The Hospital for Sick Children . . . Those who know Cheyenne would agree that she is an incredibly motivated and successful person, but this journey has not always been smooth sailing for her.

Cheyenne has experienced feelings of impostor syndrome. Also known as impostor phenomenon, this occurrence describes individuals who struggle with accepting their own achievements and competencies, often attributing their successes to luck. This can lead to feelings of self-doubt, fear of failure, and fear of being exposed as an “impostor” or a “fraud” . . . Cheyenne, like many people, still sometimes experiences self-doubt. Now, she has helpful strategies that she uses to help her regain confidence.

In honour of Pride Month, we are happy to share one of our community members' story of navigating sexuality and coming out 🏳️‍🌈 ❤️

Behind Sophie's Mind . . .

"I didn’t know I was q***r until I was eighteen, and saying it took me by surprise is an understatement. My whole life up until university, I felt pretty ‘normal’ and never questioned my sexuality. Everyone I knew was straight, everyone I grew up with was straight, so I assumed I was too. Looking back on my high school years, there were many signs that pointed to me questioning my sexuality; I just never processed or thought too much about them (always being interested in the LGBTQAI+ community, being invited by teachers and staff to pride classes and events etc.). If I’m being honest, I think some of my teachers suspected I was gay before the thought even crossed my mind..."

TW: This post may be triggering in light of the recent discovery of the deceased indigenous children found on the grounds of Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia.

June celebrates National Indigenous History Month. This month we honour the history, heritage and diversity of Indigenous peoples in Canada. It is an opportunity to recognize the strength and resilience of present- day Indigenous communities. We must appreciate and acknowledge the contributions First Nations, Inuit and Métis people have made in shaping Canada and recognize the shame of the residential school system and the suffering it has caused. This month we honour the lives of those who were impacted by Canada’s history and spread awareness of mental health in the Indigenous Community.

Please see the last page for resources available to support any Indigenous people currently struggling with mental wellness.

💚 INTRODUCING... our all-in-one Mental Health Resource Document! 💚

It can often be difficult and overwhelming to quickly find appropriate and accessible mental health resources in your area that fit your needs.

Our team has been hard at work in finding mental health services in regions all across Ontario and have compiled it into this one-stop resource document! 📄 Categorized by the type of service and population it serves, it is now easier to search for appropriate services such as:

📞 Crisis/Help Lines & Referrals
🏘 Emergency Shelter/Housing Services
🧑🏻‍⚕️ Counselling & Community Services

We plan to expand the document to include other regions and provinces across Canada in the near future 🇨🇦

Visit https://behindmymind.com/pages/resources to see the full document! It is also available as a downloadable PDF so you can easily save it! 📥

*Please like, save, and share this post to get it circulating throughout our community! 💚

Behind Carleigh's Mind . . .

"I was nicknamed ‘the baby whisperer’ growing up. I always knew I wanted to be a mom. I have a huge extended family and lots of cousins. I knew motherhood was going to be a challenge, and even though I had heard that it would be one of the hardest things in life, I also felt it would be one of the most rewarding.

In 2005, I was involved in a tragic bus accident while traveling with my hockey team in New York. Sadly, my coach, his 13-year-old son, my friend’s mom and the truck driver were killed. My teammates and I all survived but suffered from multiple injuries. I had a head injury and sprained my wrist, but I was one of the lucky ones.

I suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder following the accident. Due to my history of mental illness, I was screened for perinatal mental illness during each pregnancy. Both pregnancies were great. The week after my son was born was pure bliss. My husband and I said it was one of the best moments of our life. But unfortunately, I began to struggle with breastfeeding which I think triggered my postpartum depression."

Our Mission

One in five Canadians lives with a mental illness in any given year, but five in five—all of us—have mental health. You have it, I have it. And we all need to take care of it.

I’ve been thinking of different ways I can positively contribute to mental health in the community for a couple years now. With Mental Illness Awareness Week here, I was ready to post my story on social media once again, in the hopes that it would reach others who struggle with mental illness, and encourage them to open up and reach out. These mental health and illness awareness days are days where people share their stories with the same hopes in mind. But what about all the other days?

This is why I’m creating the Behind My Mind campaign.

With this campaign, individuals will be sharing stories of their mental health journeys, not just for one day, but for every day thereafter. Mental health problems can affect anyone, any time, and can look very different in different people. They can alter a person’s thinking, emotional state and behaviour, and interfere with their ability to work and maintain relationships. Destigmatizing mental health problems, both externally and internally, is the first step towards contributing to mental wellness and creating a stronger community.
