Why Lyme Disease can be so difficult to diagnose.

"For so long I was only thinking about how to survive the day," says Ryan Sutter, who was diagnosed with Lyme Disease in 2021.

How our food is cooked matters.

How our food is cooked matters.

FIRE IN COOKING, FIRE IN THE BODY

For many of us, it's summer, which brings in the fire element. Fire has healing properties when it's in balance. When we have too much dry, hot heat, such as in cooking methods like grilling, frying, and broiling, we create inflammatory compounds in the food that result in more inflammatory 'fire' in the body when we eat it.

Reducing the heat from high, hot heat to low, slow methods, and using water such as with steaming (fire/water balance) or even incorporating spices before cooking can help to offset the formation of these unhealthy compounds. I like this strategy because it doesn't require a food change, but a cooking change, which is easier for many people to do.

The benefits of eating foods in season!

SEASONAL EATING

I've been coming across more (animal) studies to show that there are many factors that go into the effects of plants on our physiology. First, there are the growing conditions (e.g., latitude, altitude, sun, pests, etc.), which can change the plant's phytonutrient composition. Second, there is the element of our human physiology, such as the circannual shifts in the gut microbiome, which can impact secondary metabolism. Third, there are the Earth's rhythms through the sun exposure. These factors, from micro to macro, influence how we all connect through nature.

One study I was reading this morning showed that locally-grown versus non-local tomatoes had different polyphenols, which led to different metabolic effects in rats. Further, feeding these different tomatoes at different photo-periods that mimic the seasons also related to changes in bioavailability.

While seasonal eating may be common sense to most, it's great that we are coming into a deeper understanding of our interconnections to help inform our decisions on many levels. Also, I think it's important to have these plant foods regardless of the season, however, when they are available in season, even more impact.

What gives your life MEANING and PURPOSE?

Barbara Frederickson and colleague Steve Cole conducted an experiment in 2013 which showed that people with a low level of life purpose had three impaired gene pathways in their immune systems, while people with a high level of life purpose had healthy gene expression of their immune systems.

Our genes appear to reward us for being connected to a cause larger than ourselves by fighting off cold and flu viruses and other invaders that could make us ill. (https://coachfederation.org)

DID YOU KNOW that sleep may be the period when the brain cleanses itself of toxic molecules?

A study funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), part of NIH, has shown that the space between brain cells may increase during sleep, allowing the brain to flush out toxins that build up during waking hours.

Scientists have also shown that sleep is important for storing memories.

How's your sleep?

According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), the "Dirty 12" contain the most pesticides and consumers may want to consider purchasing organically grown fruits and vegetables on this list.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), "Pesticide drift can pose health risks when sprays and dusts are carried by the wind and deposited on other areas...."

It's ALWAYS a good idea to use a natural produce wash before consuming produce.

Got stress?

ASSOCIATION BETWEEN FRUIT & VEGETABLE INTAKE AND PERCEIVED STRESS

A study in Australian adults showed that greater intake of specific types of fruits and vegetables was associated with lower odds for high perceived stress, even after controlling for factors like diet quality and physical activity. Specifically, these were the foods with greatest association:

- Apples & pears
- Oranges & citrus
- Bananas
- Cruciferous vegetables
- Yellow/orange/red vegetables
- Legumes

Even though there were specific foods identified, the researchers did support 'including ‘a rainbow of colours’ as part of a healthy diet.' Yes, "eat the rainbow" for the potential full-spectrum of health benefits!

Did you know that according to the CDC, HEART DISEASE is the leading cause of death for men, women, and people of most racial and ethnic groups in the United States?

One person dies every 36 seconds in the United States from cardiovascular disease.

About 659,000 people in the United States die from heart disease each year—that’s 1 in every 4 deaths.

⁣Sugar really is the number one recreational drug out there..⠀

The challenge is here ….when you’re eating or drinking sugar, especially sugar with more fructose in it (like high fructose corn syrup), your blood sugar goes up.⠀

When your blood sugar goes up, so does your insulin to bring your blood sugar back down. And elevated blood sugar is extremely problematic.⠀

The problem is that insulin stays up for a long time and blood sugar reacts quickly. When that happens and the insulin is up and blood sugar is down, your body can’t access stored fat for fuel and you’re hungry again. Then you go and grab more foods and drinks for quick “energy”. ⠀

The minute you do, blood sugar rises again, insulin stays up, and now it’s created a situation where you’re inflamed, and can’t access stored fat for fuel. ⠀

The solution? Obviously the ideal situation is to stop it completely. ⠀

I know that’s not the easiest for many - which is why I recommend starting with a few steps… ⠀

First, go low-sugar impact and be mindful of places that might contain sneaky sources of sugar. For example, salad dressings, condiments, sauces, and even seemingly healthy “health” drinks like orange juice or Gatorade.⠀

For more tips on how to wean off sugar, click the link below to read my blog post. ⠀
