During the DAR Day of Service, the Norvell Robertson Chapter undertook the task of cleaning the World War II monument, which was established by the 1944 graduating class to honor Hattiesburg High School students who served in the war. Out of those who served, thirty made the ultimate sacrifice.

As part of the America 250! program, Norvell Robertson and Shadrack Rogers Chapters collaborated recently to unveil a marker honoring American Revolutionary War Soldier Norvell Robertson.

On this Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day, MAFM recognizes the mothers and families that have tragically lost a loved one while in service to the United States Armed Forces. Since 1936, the last Sunday in September has been a day of observance to honor the nation’s Gold Star Mothers. Please take a moment today to remember the mothers, fathers, wives, husbands, and families of fallen military service members and their loss and sacrifice.

From the collection: Gold Star mother Maidie B. Jones of Corinth, Mississippi, solemnly gazes upon the gravesite of her fallen son, Private Alfred P. Jones, while on a trip to France in 1930. Private Jones was killed in action in France during World War I and was buried at Oise-Aisne American Cemetery. Maidie B. Jones was a twice Gold Star Mother; her son Seaman Second Class Isaac Jarrett Jones, Jr. also died while in service during the war.

During the Month of the Military Child we honor and celebrate military children and youth for their service, commitment, and sacrifice in support of the Army's mission. This year's theme was “Military Youth and Children: Brave, Fearless and Resilient." Our chapter sent super hero capes as well as crowns and tiaras as requested by the USO for use in their celebration event.

Studies show that access to books is key to reading achievement. In middle-income neighborhoods, there are an average of 13 books per child. In poorer neighborhoods, there is only approximately one book for every 300 kids, so kids often have no children’s books at home. Chapter members recently collected books for the DREAM Program of Hattiesburg to help provide area children with books.
