Expedition Recovery We offer rewarding experiences, to our recovery community, that promote individual growth through educational outdoor activities. Nature heals.

We create an environment that encourages presence and vulnerability. We recover together. We empower our clients to build a life and recovery plan that matches their own goals. We educate clients with skills that transfer from the outdoors to the day-to-day. We create the atmosphere that encourages that through engaging outdoor activities that are conducted in an emotionally and physically safe ma

nner. We achieve outcomes by showing up with authenticity, keeping our focus on the client first, understanding the client’s needs and tailoring experiences that present the appropriate level of risk to promote growth. We do this by teaching skills that transfer from the outer world to the inner world. We reduce risk to the lowest possible level while still offering valuable experiences. Experiential learning promotes integration of the knowledge and skills gained. We strongly believe there are multiple pathways to recovery. We offer a program of empowerment through the development of outdoor skills, individual goal setting, mentoring and connection with nature. Our Values:
1. Play – necessary to development of skills at every stage of life, required for emotional regulation.
2. Passion – the source of purpose, commitment and inspiration that drives us to be our best.
3. Presence – the way in which we show up for ourselves and our community; emotionally available, authentic and vulnerable.
4. Local Community - Strong community supports individual well-being and individual well-being strengthens community.
5. Recovery First - Supporting people, suffering with the disease of addition, is an integral part of why we do what we do.
6. The Natural World - Conservation of the natural world is key to protecting the enjoyment and learning of all individuals, communities and future generations

We are, first and foremost, peers in recovery. We have the shared experience in recovery the gives us firsthand knowledge to relate directly to our clients. We are members of the community. We are recovery professionals and outdoor educators. Our clients are individuals in recovery or trying to clarify their own relationship with recovery. They have begun a journey either through working with a therapist or through formal treatment. Our clients are seeking to strengthen their recovery, find their own path or build life goals.

Recently I made a visit to the DMV. 18 months is long enough - it’s time to turn in my PA drivers license for an NC diver’s license.

Because I don’t like to rush while driving, I gave myself plenty of time.

As I came around a corner I witnessed the beauty of the fog settling behind the mountains.

Since I had the extra time, I pulled over and simply enjoyed it for a few moments. This is the value of slowing the f**k down.

On a separate note, I have decided to leave Facebook and Instagram. Meta’s recently decision to ignore facts and support blatant lies combined with Mark Zuckerberg’s support for toxic masculinity and the companies opening the gates to hate speech are more than I’m willing to tolerate.

I’ve never had much trust in Zuckerberg but he seems to be afraid of Trump and I don’t trust cowards.

At this time my plan is to start sharing my typical content through my weekly newsletters starting February 1st. I’ll also have some presence on LinkedIn.

Reach out if you want to stay in touch.

Be well, y’all!

Today is Day 3 of the Seven Day Slowdown.

My goal is to meditate every day even if for just a few minutes. A little goes a long way. And somedays I get busy, forget, whatever.

So, I decided to break “forever” down into bit size chunks; 7 days at a time.

We restart every week on Monday and check in about our progress.

I would love if you join in! You can meditate, journal, take a mindful walk or any other activity that increases your mindful awareness.

This is an opportunity to make time for yourself and slow the f**k down!

Remember, a little goes a long way. And this is about make improvements not getting it perfect.

Be well, y’all!

Take Action Even When You Don’t Have The Right Answer

You don’t have to know how before you take action.

That is a scary concept. Often times we feel like we have to know how to do something before we can get started. We want to understand before we put in the effort.

I was supposed to be guiding a high stakes project and I didn’t know where to start. I didn’t have a lot of depth the area of focus.

And after days of research, I found a well-established framework and learned some important tasks for the project.

However, I felt overwhelmed. I had already put so much work and I didn’t know where to start. I didn’t know the ins and outs and I was afraid to make a mistake.

Eventually, I knew I had to talk to my boss about it.

To my surprise, she told me to trust my gut and that she had my back. My gut told me to take action and see what happened.

Not everything went well. Some tasks were a mess.

It didn’t happen over night, however, over time I started to get a handle on the project and the role. Eventually I even got to a place where I was an authority on the subject matter and a resource to others. I just needed to get started.

“All genuine learning comes through experience”
- John Dewey, American Philosopher

If you are stuck and can’t take action, here are some things you can do:
1. Find a teacher or framework.
2. TAKE ACTION!
3. Look back at the results.
4. Adjust as necessary.
5. Try Again! And keep trying it until you figure out.

You don’t have to know how before you take action. It is like walking in the dark. You have to slow down and you have to keep moving forward.

Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; the courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.

On a day like today, remembering what I can and cannot change will protect my peace.

If you want peace, be peaceful.
-Gil Fronsdal

This might seem oversimplified, however, it’s true.

Anger and violence lead to more anger and violence.

Wars don’t end by one side admitting that they were wrong. They end because one side recognizes that can’t tolerate more death.

If you want to live in peace you have to bring peace into everything you do.

As the Buddha said, hatred does not end hatred, by love alone is healed.

We’re in chaotic times. Protect your peace!

The struggle ends when gratitude begins.
-Neale Donald Walsch

When I lack gratitude, all I can see are the negatives and challenges.

I’m blinded by what my difficulties and what I’m missing in my life.

But, when I make time to intentionally look for the positive in my life, I find it everywhere.

I now understand just how wonderful my life is, even when things aren’t going exactly my way.
