WEEK 7: JAPANESE WEEK

Back on the kitchen after a mental break 🙂 Meet the week that nearly broke me! and I have never felt so under appreciate for our gyoza efforts haha. Obviously still not over it 😫

A bit about Japanese food:
The traditional Japanese diet is high in grains, vegetables, meat, lots of fish and tofu. Okinawa, south Japan, has the highest number of centenarians in the world and lowest incidence of age related diseases such as diabetes, Alzheimer’s, arthritis and cancer. All attributed to their low saturates fat and nutrition dense colourful diets!

Sumo Fact: Contrary to belief Sumo Wrestles eat very nutrient dense meals, that are very high in protein and veg and served with grains. Sumo wrestlers in Japan eat 2 meals a day and these meals can make up a 6000-7000kcal daily intake!

WEEK 6: EGGY AFFAIRE

Here are 5 eggy facts.
1. Eggs are not diary! Dairy are foods that are produced from the milk of mammals – cows and goats…so not eggs :)
2. There is 7g protein in a medium egg. There is also 5.1g of fat, only 1.4g is saturated so they’re pretty good for you!
3. The yolk contains most of the nutrients! So using egg whites only may bulk up the meal and cut the fats, but it will also lose some of the protein, iron, folates and other vitamins that support good health.
4. Eggs are a great way of topping up the protein content of your meals. By adding a poached egg on top, or even boiling a couple eggs to make a heathy protein snack or recovery from training.
5. Poaching, boiling and baking are the healthiest way to cook eggs. Scrambled also if done in a pan with a stable oil such as olive oil or no oil at all. Frying obviously carries a lot of calories due to the amount of fat used in the cooking process so again a stable oil is recommended.

COVID19 SURVIVAL KITCHEN WEEK 5
THEME: FUELLED BY ITALY

High carb week 😁 (actually this was about 3 weeks ago, but I’ll catch up). Massive shout out to the guys who made their own pasta and those who made pizza bases from Greek yoghurt and flour 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Carbs are your main fuel source and are essential for both physical and mental performance. How much you require depends on a multitude of factors primarily your body mass and your training; so the type of session, how hard it is, the duration and number of sessions on a day. Consuming too little can put you in low energy availability meaning you don’t have enough energy to fuel training, which can increase injury risk and compromise health. Too much and it will go to your fat stores impacting your power:weight.

Understanding you’re energy demand across training cycles, week by week, day by day, session by session will enable you to fuel your sessions effectively and enhance training intensity and quality. Learning the nutrient content of foods will empower you to make informed decisions in every supermarket or hotel buffet and be confident that your choices are the right ones for you on that day 💪🏼

THEME: NUT WEEK

I loved seeing such a simple theme bring such a variety of dishes that can be used as fuelling, recovery sources and treats 😋 Nuts are packed full of Omega 3 aka ‘good fats’ which have been linked to reducing inflammation and muscle damage after a hard session, as well as supporting brain function and cardiac health.

There is 9kcal in 1 gram of fat, which means they quickly become very calorie dense and you need to monitor your serving sizes. For example a serving of Walnuts is 15g (that’s 4 nuts!) and that serving contains 10g fat, of 1.1g are saturates, 2.5g protein and only 0.5g carb totalling 105kcal. Nutrient content of nuts vary... so check your nuts 😬

Disclosure: despite containing the word nut, Coconut, along with Chestnut, Water Chestnut, Palm nut, Nutmeg and Butternut squash are not part of the nut family. We only included coconut as I happen to have 1kg of the stuff 😂
