Although most long-term/skilled-nursing facilities continue to be for-profit entities, they are still missing the mark on proper cleaning and disinfection. Nursing homes with five stars are considered to have "above average quality" while nursing homes with one star are considered to have "below average quality" (cms.gov). CDC BETR Study recommendations identify the importance of having a two-part cleaning process to effectively mitigate hazards with pathogen, virus and fungicidal transfers. High-touch surfaces and patient bathrooms are at the forefront of the problem. Safe, reliable products and systems are readily available. It's time to hold for-profits accountable for lack of proper cleaning as it directly impacts the most vulnerable populations.

Stanford has developed a blood test that determines how the body responds to an illness. Understanding the difference between bacterial and virus illness in people is a positive step in reducing over prescribed antibiotics. This will help reduce antimicrobial resistance and help a patient obtain antibodies to fight off illness through their own immune systems.

A diagnostic test developed by Stanford Medicine scientists can separate bacterial and viral infections with 90% accuracy, the first to meet standards set by the World Health Organization.

Cleaning and disinfection does not have to be difficult! A systematic cleaning approach with some general knowledge about cleaning products can make all the difference in the world.

>Read the product labels and adhere to wet (dwell) times.

>If you use microfiber towels, they are contaminated by the third wiped surface and need replaced

>Wet wipes are a good alternative

>Use disposable paper towels when dispensing sprays

As we approach the winter months, staying indoors increases risk of catching any virus. Understanding safe measures to deploy at home, work and throughout your day can limit your risk. Of course the best option is to protect yourself from getting sick, which may include nutritional meals, supplements, exercise, plenty of sleep and vaccinations.

Develop a plan that works best for you and your needs now! The facts are that high-touch surfaces and dirty hands are the most likely places to pick up an illness. Keep surfaces clean, wash your hands regularly and stay home when you're ill.

Health officials are redoubling calls for Americans to get vaccinated, with flu shots lagging previous seasons.

As we approach the winter months where staying indoors is more prevalent, the risk of catching a virus increases for you and everyone you're around. Understanding home treatment and medical care options if you become seriously ill can help eliminate some fear. Of course, the best option is to protect yourself from getting sick. Develop your plan now and know there are many treatment options available.

Remember...high-touch surfaces are very likely places to pass along secondary illness. Use disposable towelettes and wipes to reduce cross-contamination, and be sure to read instructions for the proper way to use each product for maximum effectiveness.

There are several factors that have contributed to staffing shortages in LTC/SNF. With nearly 70% of facilities being for profit, it is reasonable to ask the question, “What strategies are facilities using to retain qualified staff and attract new employees?” Even though shortages in staffing are likely to trend higher over the next several years, there are opportunities to invest in employees. Daylight Medical appreciates all the hard work our medical personnel undertakes day in and day out. The service they provide to the most vulnerable populations is so important. We appreciate your dedication and wanted you to know that you matter to so many people! Thank you for all that you are.

We are not in the clear of COVID waves of infections. Prepare your staff, protect your patients, and continue to scrutinize your procedures as they relate to infection control safety. At minimum, a two-step disinfection process -- chemical clean followed by UV-C -- is required to properly guard against secondary infectious transfer. All UV-C is not created equal...ask us why.

The general public may be desensitized and have covid fatigue, but this silent colorless virus still lurks amongst us. After surviving a scorching heat wave, the country may have to brace for a COVID-19 wave as cases rise in many states.

20/05/2022

Although COVID continues to be a topic on the nightly news, it’s really important that we start addressing disease prevention, protection and elimination. A contagious illness comes in many forms, and preventing secondary exposure risks to patients and staff must be prioritized. Chemical cleaning/disinfection and augmented UV-C as a secondary measurer help control spread and are a necessity in corporate healthcare policy. Properly using chemicals combined with improved effort and increased training increases effectiveness, however, research recommends the BEST SOLUTION integrates both chemical cleaning and UV-C – the combination is seen as the “new standard” offering the highest efficacy.

Ensuring effective disinfection protocols is our passion and we can help you create standards that help ensure safety -- your patients and staff are worth the effort. Infectious control does not have to be complicated! Cleaning alone is not disinfecting and disinfecting without cleaning is pointless. The CDC BETR Study and CMS guidelines provide valuable insight into reducing pathogen threats to patients and staff. On a “best day”, cleaning staff efforts miss 35% of contaminated surfaces, plus there is only 50% effectiveness on most chemicals used! Understanding the threat, using the right chemical, applying cleaners and disinfectants properly, with augmented “proven” secondary efforts such as UV-C are the only best practices that significantly improve safety standards. MoonBeam3 (third-party efficacy tested) is the most reliable, powerful, mobile, multi-angled UV-C delivery system in the world. Visit Daylightmedical.com and request a demo or ask for a free downloadable best practice guide to evaluate your environmental cleaning/disinfection standards. Stay in the know.
