Repeat after me, "I will not work off the clock".

To all my traveler and nontraveler new grads. Before accepting a job make sure you are not getting lowballed. Ask someone about your rate or post it in a group to see if it is a fair rate. I have seen many new grads take lower rates. This is in part because of a lack of education and companies may try to pay as little as possible. Yes, new grads need a bit more training to begin but your license bills the same amount to insurance companies compared to a therapist with 20 years of experience. The more we accept the low rates the more it lowers rates for everyone. This is coming from someone who was lowballed for my first permanent job and my first travel job.

I remember going in on my first day of work. The job was nothing like I thought it would be.

The more therapists accept unrealistic productivity requirements the more corporate thinks it is acceptable and will increase the productivity standards. I want to encourage you all to do what is best and right for the patient.

Never sign up for a job without knowing all the details. Employee turnover is just as bad for the employer as it is for the therapist. As a travel therapist, I always ask as many interview questions as possible and check for reviews before accepting a job!

A friendly reminder to always negotiate. Does not matter if you are satisfied with pay. A few sentences can make you thousands more and most employers are open to negotiating. The worse an employer can do is say no.

Travel Contracts on average are 13 weeks long. Some are shorter and some are longer based on the need. I love the set end dates. If a contract is a bad experience it is only for 13 weeks. You are free to do whatever you please after a contract. You can work for another contract, extend, or take months off. The flexibility is a big pro. You will not get paid when you are not working most of the time though so best to have months of emergency savings if taking ample time off.
