One of the most loved yoga techniques, but also quite misunderstood.

Mainly practiced in Savasana, some people get away from the yoga studio when it’s time for it, thinking “I don’t have time for just laying down on the floor”… others will use the moment for a little nap 💤

The goal is too deeply relax the body, and to put the mind in a state between awake and asleep. It’s a state of meditation! It is an opportunity to connect with yourself and improve awareness.

I could go on and on about this beautiful technique… I’ll come back to it in another moment. For now, trust me! Practice it and thank me later 😉

The well known sound of OM is one example of mantra. It is a special one because it is considered to be the original sound of the universe...

But there are many other mantras for us to chant. Some are just silabs, or words... some are frases or a full pray. Some mantras are chanted in repetition, some become songs to be sang and danced.

Like yoga itself, there are mantra practices for everyone, depending on your preferences, your needs, your goals.

They are beautiful, but also powerful. It's curious how many people think these hand/body figures and movements are silly, but after practicing a few times, they cannot deny that something has changed.

When you meditate, you are practicing Pratyáhára... when you concentrate on a pose/asana, without judgment, you are practicing Pratyáhára... when you listen to your intuition, you are practicing Pratyáhára...

It is about the withdrawal of the senses or sensory inputs into our physical being. It is not allowing a sensory overload, turning inwards and connecting with our divine self.

There is a difference in between breathing on auto pilot, and breathing with attention and intention. Actually, this exercise of focusing on our breathing is a powerful way of putting ourselves into the present… here and now! And it is also a great exercise for self-awareness, self-control, self-knowledge…

If you give yourself 5 minutes every day, to just close your eyes and pay attention on the air flowing in and out of your lungs, the movement your body does when you inhale and exhale, and what sensations this brings you… you will greatly improve your daily well-being…

Prána is considered to be the vital energy of the universe and it is captured mostly by the breathing techniques called Pránáyámas.

You may not believe in this vital energy stuff, and it is ok. But the benefits of practicing Pránáyamas are so evident that you can believe in whatever you want.

The fact is that our life begins with a breath, and finishes just after the last one. Without oxigenation, the different parts of your body will simply not work.

There are more than 50 different of these exercises, and you can choose which one to practice depending on your goal.

Yesterday I said that an asana is a physical practice, but that it also works on our mind and our soul. But how is that possible?

So, for this asana of the photo some things can be more obvious than others. To be in this pose I need flexibility, strength, balance… but I also need focus, breathing control, patience.

Every asana we do, will work some different combination of these aspects I’ve said. For some, we’ll need to work for longer time than others. For some, the anatomical structure of your body will say NO NO… and then it also comes the importance of learning how to listen to your body, to know your strengths and accept your limitations.

There is always more to talk about this theme, we’ll do it slowly.

Yes, I’m in pijamas and my hair is a total mess… But that’s real life!

I have dogs. Practicing yoga around them means having to fight for space on my mat, and getting many surprise kisses while you’re trying to focus 😅

With cats is a bit different… they usually paralise us by getting on top of whatever asana we are on 🤷🏼‍♀️ I cannot say I didn’t like this, haha

It's funny because it's true 🤪

It is a common misconception though... but if you stop to think, those who actually look for a practice of self-knowledge, self-lovo, self-control etc etc, are those who find it hard in the first place.

I started practicing Yoga when I was 18, and I was taken to the classes because I was strugling in a f**king bad depressive crises.

Every yoga practicioner will have their own stories about it, I'm sure of it.

So that's exactly the point when working on emotional stability, balance and self-control. Life is hard, we'll never stop having difficulties... the goal shouldn't be to have an easy life, because that's just an ilusion.

We have to learn how to deal with our strugles, with frustration, with other people's behaviors, and with situations that are not under our control.

We need to choose, every day, to take control of our emotions. And no, nobody is saying it is easy... it is not easy. Emotional control is an exercise, you need practice, and sometimes it is more difficult than others... Just keep trying!

Yoga gives us many tools to help us on this quest. Ask me how 😉

Many people tell me they cannot really meditate because their mindes won't stop wandering... Well, as an ADHD myself, I can tell you that my mind is also always trying to go everywhere 😅

But let me tell you something else: the more you think meditation is difficult, the more you need it! And the more you will benefit from it!

Take these tips I am sharing with you, and keep trying... it may never become an easy exercise, but it will always be an awesome one for improving your well-being!

My yoga room is in an area of the house that is not heated, so I just do my personal practices beside my bed sometimes...

Now that the spring has arrived and we are having some warmer days, I can go practice in this little studio I've organized for my online classes, and really take my time. I like it so much more when I can go there, use more space, and don't get distracted with anything else it needs to be done.

That is when I can really flow!

Yoga and mindfullness are totally related!

You have to pay attention, on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally during your practices. And that's is also one way of bringing yoga to other moments of your life, when you are out of your mat.

Try remembering that while you are walking, cooking, taking a shower, having a conversation, playing with your kids or pets... Be there living it fully!

Many people think that those who practice yoga should have a perfect life... I practice for more than half of my life and I can tell you that I never stopped having problems, feeling stressed, sad, overwhelmed... Does that mean I am doing it wrong? No, that just means I am human!

We are all in the same world. It is a beautiful world, but it is also frustrating sometimes. I mean, we have diseases, accidents, wars... we have our hearts broken more times than we would like to. It is ok to feel whatever you feel.. it is all normal! Life is movement, and we need light and shadow to see the whole picture!

Most of the time we will only have control over ourselves, and how we will act is up to us. I can let the anger take over, or I can change my point of view.

It is not easy. It was never supposed to be easy. It is a daily exercise, but we will become better and better... It's a process, and the first steps are the hardest. Trust in yourself and keep walking!!
