There is much we can learn from our sun - its light allows us to see the beauty in the world.

Our lives are, to a large extent, driven by the brilliant illumination of the sun. WHAT ARE TELOMERES?
The genetic key to aging

Aging is inevitable-but to a great extent, aging and staying healthy are under our control. Positive lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet, moderate exercise affect how we age. These healthy choices impact structures in our genes called telomeres. Biological age can be predicted by the length of our telomeres, according to researchers working the field of preventive medicine.

Telomeres are DNA-protein complexes found at the end of chromosomes that control the aging process. They protect the end of the chromosomes from becoming damaged. (Picture the protective caps at the end of a shoelace and you have the idea.) If these telomeres are damaged or shortened, our cells age and die quicker, triggering aging and disease.

To influence your telomeres and thus longevity, eat a diet that reduces inflammation and provides healthy antioxidant-rich foods. Think lots of colorful fruits and veges, especially berries, cherries, plums, apples, artichokes and dark-green and orange foods like yams, pumpkin, kale, collards, spinach, and chard.

Nuts, seeds, and omega-3 rich fish such as salmon, trout, sardines and anchovies are fantastic for your health! Add some lovely spices like turmeric, ginger, or your favorite sauce for a yummy and healthy treat.

Stay away from diet soda, refined sugars, saturated and trans fats, white bread. Once diet soda a day prematurely ages the cells.

Exercise! Walk, bike, run, sports, yoga, anything that brings you joy! Activity influences telomeres length, while sedentary time reduces length. Less TV, more walking please!

In short, healthy choices affect our overall wellness. Take action to positively influence your telomeres and set the stage for fewer illnesses and a longer life.
