I got my first scar at age two, when I fell and broke a vitamin bottle I was holding and the glass cut my face. I do not know my own face without the scar it left, and I love it.

My smile lines have been creeping in slowly since age 6, taking up more real estate and spreading around my eyes so now even when I am not actively smiling, you can plainly see: I have spent much if my life in active smiles or laughter.

Not every scar reminds me of happy times, or bravery, but of sadness, of fear. Not every sun spot is from basking. But these, too, tell important chapters of my life's story.

My body came to the world soft and plain, and has been marked by my unique life every day since my birth. My body is a roadmap, and I have loved the roads it has traveled.
