So excited to be teaching again!

You can currently find me at WestSide Athletic Club in Powell’s Point Tuesday evenings 6:30-7:30PM (beginning Feb 8, Thursdays also).

My class is for all levels. I provide modifications and opportunities to advance poses at your own pace.

Don’t expect it to be easy, but it also wont be as hard as you might think. Growth happens outside our comfort zone.

I promise there will be mindfulness, a little Breathwork, a little sweat as we work on our core strength and stability, and tune our bodies. We strive for connection with the Self and with others, openess of the body and mind, strength in the will, empowerment, and deep relaxation.

Adding a new tool in my fitness toolbox. Yoga and drumming? Why yes, I think I will.

Gomukhasana (Cow Faced Pose) + Variations For Tight Hips

Revolved Cow Face Pose or Gomukhasana. Also called Shoelace Pose in Yin Yoga.

This pose is dreaded by many with tight hips, but be easy on yourself! Start wherever you are and be patient.

🐮 Stack the knees, one on top of the other, with right foot next to your left hip and left foot next to your right.

🐮 The closer the heels are to your hips, the less intense. Stay here, with torso lengthened and tall, perhaps placing the hands behind you for support.

🐮Afte several minutes, about five, notice the hips open up and begin to hinge forward. You may even try pull the heels away from the hips, a little at a time, only so far as to reach the edge of the stretch and push yourself a little bit more. We have to push ourselves just a little passed the comfort zone or we won’t grow!

🐮 Use a pillow to rest your head and forearms on. You can also place a blanket beneath the sitz bones to elevate the hips and reduce stress on the knees.

Most importantly remember that wherever you are is fine. Keep breathing and send loving compassion and acceptance to the area of your body that is tense, the hips and lower back.

Having someone massage the lower back can also help release you further into the pose. You may also want to try a little “tenderizing” the hips (hammer the hips with your fist to help loosen up the muscle).

Repeat on the opposite side.

Have a beautiful, blessed day! Namaste!

Interested in becoming a certified yoga teacher? When I joined the Flow State Yoga teacher training about a year ago, I had no intention of actually teaching yoga. I only thought to deepen my practice. Many people sign up for yoga teacher training with the same idea and many, like me, end up becoming a yoga teacher.

If teaching yoga has ever crossed your mind, watch this free Master Class from the founder of the Flow State Yoga Institute, Dashama Konah.

If, like me, you realize this is one of your heart's secret desires, you may find your life enhanced and transformed in ways you never knew possible.

There are several options to choose from ranging from completely online to a 30 day retreat in Bali. Which will you choose?

I am studying chakra yoga so I can provide classes specifically for healing the chakra centers. I had not even heard of chakras until about ten years ago and I did not understand them until joining YTT. Learning about chakras gave me insight into my own healing journey and how yoga helped me. Today, I would like to talk about the first chakra.

The first Chakra, called Muladhara, meaning "root" in Sanskrit, is located at the base of the spine. It is associated with survival and self-preservation and its goal is to provide stability, grounding, support the development of our health, prosperity and trust. This chakra begins to form from about the third trimester to 12 months. Our Muladhara Chakra teaches us about our right to be here.

As you can imagine, when this chakra is unbalanced many issues can arise in our continuing growth and development. For me, it was an unstable home life and being forced to move around. I did not feel like I belonged anywhere and I certainly did not feel like I had roots. Even after I left home I continued to move and this became a way of life. When people asked me where I was from, I experienced a lot of anxiety. Which address should I give them? Sometimes, I would give them all of them and even go so far as to say my mother's Mississippi and her ancestors have been in since the southeast since before the Revolutionary War. If you want to really understand my anxiety, when I left the military I moved to Charleston, SC, where I had traced back my farthest ancestor in the late 17th century. Talk about having a complex!

Now, I understand these roots don't have to be physical or even pinpointed to one local. I can ground myself without putting down roots. My journey into yoga has helped balance my root chakra so that I am beginning to heal in other areas as well.

The root chakra is associated with the earth element. Going outside and putting your bare feet on the ground can provide an instant grounding. Spending time in nature can also help balance the root chakra. Any physical touching, such as massage, can help as well.

Many people with an unbalanced root chakra feel disconnected from their bodies. This creates an inability to connect with others as well. I have experienced this first hand. Without yoga, I may never have become aware of this imbalance or understood what was happening within my energy centers.

Some yoga poses that can help with Root Chakra balancing are the Warrior sequences, Goddess pose, Tree Pose, and Chair Pose.

Because food comes from the earth, diet can also help balance this chakra center, especially when adding more root vegetables into your diet.

Look for my first class on balancing the root chakra to come out soon, along with a restorative routine and diet plan.
