"The less autonomy a child is given, the more they will try to assert control over every tiny little thing, in an attempt to get it back. And the reverse is also true. The more autonomy a child is given, the more easily they will be willing to give up control when necessary, because it doesn't threaten their sense of autonomy." —Blimie Heller

"There are days that we thrive and days we Survive"

I had a good cry this morning.

It was all just too hard.

Washing that covered the laundry floor, wet stuff and sand through the house..

A new hole in the wall covered by pretty IKEA wall hung pictures.

A bottle of spray tipped onto the floor and talcum powder emptied onto the clean clothes in the basket that I hadn’t got to yet.

Trying to find a new brand of pull-ups for teenagers and realising the children are indeed growing and need new clothes.

Multiple showers and baths across the day, stripping beds and changing channels.

That and other issues I won’t dump here.

I sat on the back step and cried.

I asked the children to give me five minutes, I shared that I felt so tired and overwhelmed; and that some days are just harder to manage and accept.

I got up, went inside and washed the dishes. Collected the laundry and added to the pile as one load at a time washes (I’ve considered having two machines!), filled a garbage bag or five with rubbish from each room and continued on.

And then..spontaneously, I jumped into water. My eight year old joined me and we laughed and shouted and made the most of it, knowing I’d return to the chaos afterwards.

There are days where we thrive, and days where we survive.

On my survival days, I know it’s important to be self compassionate.

I am doing the best I can.

As I start to tour high school options for my twins, I'm baffled about why high schools don't have playgrounds for children to play on.

There is so much research stating the importance of physical activity for reducing depression, anxiety, stress and fatigue. Yet the school environment seems to not promote physical activity enough for teenagers.

We have an increasing number of teenagers who are feeling overwhelmed. Feeling absorbed by technology and social media. Their brain and body is craving the joy that we experience when we slowly swing back and forth on a swing, or the excitement that we feel when we slide down a slide.

Why should the playground layout change as children become older?

Science is showing us that when we play upside down, or tuck our body into fetal position, our vagus nerve settles our fight/flight system and eases our anxiety. Yet high schools only seem to offer football ovals, basketball courts, and benches for sitting around chatting.

Surely we can change this culture and put a playground in each high school. To bring joy. To bring more physical activity. To socially connect teens while swinging and hanging upside down, rather than socially connecting teens on smart devices or while sitting still on park benches.

What are your thoughts?

On my high horse rant...Today I found out about this finacial support that's available for 16-25 year olds with disabilities...
Question is why a professional, that I've encountered many over the years, didn't inform us of this and i had learn from a friend 🤔🤬

Yes money is good but I personally think that no amount of money will help your loved one transition if they have social anxiety, need executive functioning help and the many other daily struggles that's stops them transitioning. Support and coaching is what is needed.
