Ohio 70.3 - July 20, 2025

Swim - 1:04:09
Bike - 2:45:36
Run - 2:12:32
Total - 6:12:16

Yikes. This was probably my worst 70.3, in terms of ex*****on. I, of course, know it’s possible to panic in the water. I’ve seen it happen to others, but never experienced it until this race. Pure panic. A couple different factors played into it. But ultimately I was swimming from kayak to kayak in the first 500m, something I’ve NEVER once done before in my life! Humbling. This swim time is closer to my full-IM swim time than any of my other half-IM swim times!! 😳 MUCH more on this in an upcoming podcast episode including a full recap.

Getting out of the water truly felt like a miracle. At the time I was angry. Frustrated. Not really sure what to make of the rest of the day. Knowing I had roughly 5 more hours on the course after what I went through in the water…I wasn’t excited.

Never found a groove on the bike. Couldn’t run efficiently. Just an overall “blah” day.

EVERY race is different. Every single one. This one felt more like a lesson. A slap in the face, perhaps. I’m still absorbing it and trying to learn from it. Not a “good” experience, but maybe a “necessary” one.

Once again my all-star wife managed to wrangle the gaggle of children, and that gave me a much-needed pickup.

Another finish line. Blessed.

Pennsylvania Happy Valley 70.3 - June 15, 2025

Swim - 39:17
Bike - 3:04:29
Run - 2:13:45
Total - 6:07:46

This was a fun one! Kind of felt like it had been a long time since my last half-ironman. Perhaps because I was training for an ultra for a large part of the offseason, or maybe now that I have a 1-month old 🤷🏻

I crashed here two years ago. I was lucky enough to finish the race, but was anxiously waiting to get back to State College.

Smooth swim, to be honest. I got out of the water expecting to have a faster time. I don’t think I could have swam HARDER, but I could’ve swam a bit straighter! I was still pleased. Right around 2:00/100m or slightly quicker is on par.

The ride was slick, and hilly of course. I may have been slightly more cautious than I needed to be, but I had a strong ride on the new wheels. I’m excited to see how I ride on a completely flat Ohio course in 4 weeks.

The run ended up kind of blahh. I wasn’t sure what I had, so essentially ran the first 5 miles off feel. Felt good and tried to hold roughly 8:45/mile pace. Fell off that train around 8.5-9 miles. Walked a couple times (not a fan), and ended up missing a sub-6hr. Still very pleased!

I have MUCH more on this race coming out in an upcoming podcast, but overall I had a great time, learned a lot, and feel like I took a step forward!

Great weekend for these athletes!! had an incredible full 70.3 finish on a slick day. PR’d his half marathon on a relay, and swam, shuttled, and ran as part of a relay! Great effort all around! Congrats!
