πŸ’›πŸ’™πŸ’›πŸ’™πŸ’›πŸ’™πŸ’›πŸ’™ March 21 is a special day to celebrate friends who were blessed with an extra chromosome! This day is all about celebrating friends with Down syndrome and awareness about what makes them special.
πŸ’›Down syndrome occurs when there is a an extra copy in chromosome 21. This is Trisomy 21 also known as Down syndrome. You and I have just two copies of Chromosome 21. People with Down syndrome have 3 copies.
πŸ’™Approximately one in every 772 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome, making Down syndrome the most common chromosomal condition. Often times their weeks are full of therapies- occupational, speech, and physical therapy to assist in their milestones. Because their muscle strength and tone is much lower than most, it takes more effort to learn to sit, crawl, and walk for example.
πŸ’› Research indicates that early intervention improves outcomes for children with Down syndrome. This assistance can begin shortly after birth and often continues until a child reaches age 3. After that age, most children receive interventions and treatment through their local school district.

πŸ’™On March 21st, World Down Syndrome Day, we celebrate and raise awareness by wearing our brightest, loudest socks.
And why is WDSD held on March 21st? 21:3 (chromosome 21, 3 copies = 21st day of 3rd month of the year) easy to remember!

πŸ’›πŸ’™πŸ§¦ So TOMORROW wear your craziest socks for our friends with Down Syndrome! I have so many and they have all made an impact on me over the years. They are the sweetest, most loving friends you will find. As my son said, they really have the biggest hearts of anyone I know. πŸ’™πŸ’›πŸ’™πŸ’›

March is cerebral palsy awareness month!
πŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’š I’ve had the pleasure of working with many children with cerebral palsy. This neurological condition occurs when there is an injury to the brain either before or during birth that affects the muscles- either in the arms or legs, or both, and usually the muscles for eating and speaking. β€œCerebral” refers to the brain and β€œpalsy” refers to the impairment of motor function. These kiddos (and adults) work harder than any of us could ever comprehend. Their drive to do what others do and accomplish tasks, whether big or small, is inspiring. I read this somewhere and love it:
πŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’š don’t take for granted each step you take, each time you comb your hair, dress, or even just say hello to a friend. Somewhere, someone with cerebral palsy fights for a chance to complete these tasks with independence. πŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’š

>>Did you know?
~Cerebral palsy is the most commonly diagnosed childhood motor disability in the U.S.
~Most children with cerebral palsy have spastic CP. (spastic refers to the muscle tone. Their muscles are tighter than typical)
~ The sooner targeted early interventions are started for infants and children with cerebral palsy, the better their motor and cognitive outcomes.
