ππππππππ March 21 is a special day to celebrate friends who were blessed with an extra chromosome! This day is all about celebrating friends with Down syndrome and awareness about what makes them special.
πDown syndrome occurs when there is a an extra copy in chromosome 21. This is Trisomy 21 also known as Down syndrome. You and I have just two copies of Chromosome 21. People with Down syndrome have 3 copies.
πApproximately one in every 772 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome, making Down syndrome the most common chromosomal condition. Often times their weeks are full of therapies- occupational, speech, and physical therapy to assist in their milestones. Because their muscle strength and tone is much lower than most, it takes more effort to learn to sit, crawl, and walk for example.
π Research indicates that early intervention improves outcomes for children with Down syndrome. This assistance can begin shortly after birth and often continues until a child reaches age 3. After that age, most children receive interventions and treatment through their local school district.
πOn March 21st, World Down Syndrome Day, we celebrate and raise awareness by wearing our brightest, loudest socks.
And why is WDSD held on March 21st? 21:3 (chromosome 21, 3 copies = 21st day of 3rd month of the year) easy to remember!
ππ𧦠So TOMORROW wear your craziest socks for our friends with Down Syndrome! I have so many and they have all made an impact on me over the years. They are the sweetest, most loving friends you will find. As my son said, they really have the biggest hearts of anyone I know. ππππ
