What you need to know about diaper rash and your mini... 👶🏼👶🏽

Prevention ➡️ frequent diaper changes and gentle cleansing of the diaper area. Overzealous or rough cleansing can cause irritation and delay healing. Diaper free time can help maintain skin integrity as well (an easy time to do this is before bath time!)

Treatment ➡️ for mild rashes barrier creams such as zinc are considered “first line”. If it’s worsening, lasting longer than 3 days please get it checked out by your health care provider as there may be candida involved or other problems requiring treatment.

Alternative ➡️ Breast milk remedy (this has lower supporting evidence... however has been used for years around the world). Applying breast milk three times a day on the affected area and letting it air dry before putting a diaper back on. If worsening or no improvement, then please try treatment as above :)

I didn’t make this up!

Happy Friday!!

We all know our mini’s should be placed on their back to sleep (to reduce risk of SIDS). But what happens when they roll over or end up in a less than comfortable position? 🙄 Their is no evidence that they need to be repositioned so let them be :) 😴

WHY DOES IT FEEL LIKE I HAVE A BABY SHARK??

Newborn🦈? Your adorable mini (shark) may have a tonic bite reflex that can be due to infant oral defensiveness (ie reluctance of eating or accepting sensation in or around the mouth), significant overbites, and/or tight lingual frenulum (ie tongue tie).

No matter what you are told BREASTFEEDING SHOULD NOT HURT- THERE IS A REASON WHY IT IS HURTING!!! — not every health professional is educated equally on breastfeeding! 👉🏻So you need to ensure you see a lactation professional EARLY for guidance on what you can do (ie. infant mouth physio/massage, tongue tie release, different positions for latching etc). If someone tells you your babies latch looks great, however, it feels like you have a great white shark hanging off your b**b ➡️ PLEASE go get help😬 and DON’T “wait it out”!

Your mini can also rarely be born with natal teeth (the edge may need to be smoothed to decrease your discomfort).

Teething🦈? How many breastfeeding mamas dreaded the day their mini would erupt teeth?? Teething occurs somewhere between 3-12 months and biting can obviously cause ni**le pain and trauma! Baby sharks usually bite more at the end of the feeding since their tongues cover the teeth during active feeding.
👉🏻Try this: keep your mini close while feeding with their mouth wide open (shallow latch = bite risk). Once they seem satisfied and aren’t swallowing take them off the breast (to avoid giving them the chance to bite). If your adorable shark continues to bite say “NO” firmly, break your suction with your finger and put them down somewhere safe. Try your best not to show too much excitement/emotion as we know our mini’s love reactions! Try to offer teething rings or other safe toys to help with teething discomfort. 💕You got this MAMA💕

25/01/2021

Yeast infections are caused by a fungus known as “candida” which causes inflammation to your lady bits leading to unwanted itching and irritation! 🥴 Even though they can occur without precipitating factors – there are specific risks that can predispose you to getting them. These risks include being diabetic, antibiotic use, contraceptive devices like IUDs, having increased estrogen levels (such as in pregnancy), or immunosuppression. So, pregnant ladies beware that you are at an increased risk!🤰🏻

What can you do to help prevent them❓
✅If you are diabetic keep your blood sugar within target ranges.
✅Practice good hygiene
✅Wear cotton breathable undergarments
✅Avoid douching
✅Try probiotics if you are taking antibiotics
(There is limited research to support some of these, however, many women find these useful! )

If you think you have a yeast infection brewing go see your health care provider!👩🏻‍⚕️

Pregnant? Postpartum?...Female?🤣We all have been told we should do kegels... but unless you have gone to a pelvic floor physiotherapist you may not know what they are or how to do them.

Kegels are specific exercises targeting the pelvic floor(supporting your bladder, uterus and re**um). First you need to do some locating which can be tricky so try these:

- try putting a finger inside your va**na and squeezing the muscles around your finger
- Imagine that you are sitting on a marble and have to pick it up using your va**na.

After you “find” your muscles you can do the exercises in any position (standing, sitting, or lying down).

It is usually recommended to do the following:
Squeeze your pelvic muscles, hold for ten seconds, relax completely and repeat for 10 sets. Do this 3 times per day.

There are some instances where this isn’t a good idea (not healed yet postpartum or with pelvic pain syndromes etc. so check with your health care provider first!)

Keep this going for a few months and you will definitely see improved strength, less leaking issues and less pelvic pressure related to prolapses among other benefits!

If you have concerns seeing a pelvic floor specialist can check your pelvic floor strength and teach you other exercises.

I challenge all of you to do your kegels three times today. Go find your marbles! 😂

Have you heard that lactating mamas produce excellent quality milk even when their diet is lacking? Yes... milk quality is usually adequate to support your mini’s growth; however, a persistently deficient diet can drain your nutrient stores and negatively affect the make-up of your milk😬🍼

Protein content is relatively unaffected, but fat content – specifically the type of fatty acids in human milk, and fat-soluble vitamins are reduced with maternal vitamin deficiencies. For example, we know that consuming DHA (found in 1-2 servings of fish per week) is a type of awesome omega-3-long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid that is believed to support your mini’s brain development. If, however you eat McDonald’s Big Macs every day... then you’re not going to be supplying your mini with the right types of “fats”. So, good news is your cheat meals aren’t the end of the world! But just try to do your best Mamas... and your mini’s and melon’s will thank you! 🐟🥗🍈🍈

This mini met his pups on day one home from hospital. Did you know that early exposure to dogs can protect against asthma and sensitivity to dog allergens among other allergens? This is because your dogs, while providing a whole lotta love, also add a good dose of microbes to your home environment which result in lower levels of sensitivity. Yay for pets!
