Roshi Joan Halifax invites us to consider how we can be in the world with a ‘strong back and soft front’, that is, being open hearted with courage:

"All too often our so-called strength comes from fear not love; instead of having a strong back, many of us have a defended front shielding a weak spine. In other words, we walk around brittle and defensive, trying to conceal our lack of confidence. If we strengthen our backs, metaphorically speaking, and develop a spine that’s flexible but sturdy, then we can risk having a front that’s soft and open, representing choiceless compassion. The place in your body where these two meet — strong back and soft front — is the brave, tender ground in which to root our caring deeply."

“Pay attention to the fact that we would not be here without the gifts of other beings, how does that not bring you into a state of profound gratitude, it is a radical act to reclaim your own attention and turn it to the natural world.”

One of the things I think is most important in the practise of mindfulness meditation is bringing an "unconditional friendliness" to both our minds & to our practice. It's not a competition and we don't have to compare ourselves with others, actually we are becoming friends with our minds with the aim to gently come back to the present moment.

Bhikkhu Anālayo (Buddhist monk/academic) describes the concept of mindfulness in this way,

"Right away from the moment we wake up in the morning, our good friend mindfulness can already be there. She is ready to accompany us throughout the rest of the day, encouraging us to stay receptive and open, soft and understanding. She never gets upset when we happen to forget about her. As soon as we remember her, she is right there to be with us again.”

Most of us love being in nature but do we take the time to just sit, watch, see, smell & listen?

Here is a little green frog (about the size of a 10 cent coin) I spotted in a bush when I sat quietly outside. Wherever you are, in your garden, a park, or as you walk from one place to another, or if you have some indoor plants.

If you take 10-15 mins just sitting quietly paying attention to the natural world around you, what do you notice?
