This is a very important topic and one I am witness to with many of the individuals with Cerebral Palsy who I have had the privilege of working with related to their 24-hour postural care.
I have specialised in this very specific area of clinical practice for the majority of my career.
One of the elements i pay very close attention to is the influence of sleeping/lying position on daily functions. Whether functioning from a seated or standing orientation, the way one lies for extended periods during the day or night can have a huge impact on neck, back, hip and pelvic pain.
Thank you for sharing this information. Cerebral Palsy Research Network - CPRN

Because so many of you have completed our health surveys we now know that low back pain is one of the most common concerns on the minds of adults with CP including people who walk and people who use wheelchairs.

A new commentary in Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology responds to the research we have supported on this subject and calls for lifelong, equal access and whole-person care for people with CP.

🔎 Why this commentary matters:
Low back pain impacts mobility, posture, emotional health, and quality of life.

This commentary is an important call to action for clinicians and researchers to prioritize adult care in CP and refer to the research we have begun in this area. Now we are turning our focus to understanding more about the precise sources of pain so that care and treatment options can improve for adults with CP.

When I read it , the message being shared came across to me as sadly familiar. At Posture & Mobility, we have witnessed clients/service users in the Irish system experiencing the very same dilhemma. As private clinicians specialising in ( , lying and standing), it is devastating to see the long waiting periods endured by patients (of all ages and diagnostic groups)who are in need, often followed by the provision of less than optimal solutions for varying reasons within a broken system.
We will often get contacted by clients/their family for a private postural review/hands on assessment only for them to find out that they cannot use the clinical report detailing our findings as this will cause them to lose public healthcare system benefits/ funding and provision of necessary assistive technology. In a collaborative world with a human first approach this should not be the case.

I wrote to the Cabinet secretary for health and social care. I went to see a patient at home. I sent an email to the patients statutory funded therapy team to let them know my findings so we could collaborate on care, they subsequently told me they would withdraw their services due to the patient ha...

Feedback from clinicians who recently participated in our hybrid training.

“The combination of both theory based learning and then the hands on training was a great way to learn”

“The hands on training / repetition with peers and to see Jenny reviewing the whole process on her”

“Practicing on other clinicians and going over the assessments again and again really helped with my understanding palpating and reasoning”

"Hands on training was amazing - massively increased my confidence in hands-on assessment, postural symptoms and causes.

“I also came to fully appreciate that visual observation is not enough”

The ‘hands on clinical assessment’ is a critical element of our professional responsibility when we are working with individuals of all ages and diagnoses who need 24-hour postural care.
