As comes to a close, I wanted to share this wonderful story for those that have felt “othered” by the color of their skin, accent, and/or family of origin.
Many of the ideas in this very sweet book made me think a lot on my childhood, growing up with immigrant parents. Born and raised in the heart of the US, in Kansas City, I would, and still do at times, get asked “where are you from” and be very confused as I was from “here.” They didn’t like that answer and persist until I talked about “there,” which I had very limited knowledge of my families home and lives in the Philippines.
This story was beautifully written and illustrated by two women of color, and even as an adult made my heart swell as I read it!
