"Perhaps the mythic is what happens when we rewrite our “stories” to include the rest of life (say, the trees, rivers, or bees), when we explore our depths or “what is underneath the surface in us,” and when we give way to imagination or longing.

When we do, mystery often arrives, brings possibilities for us to engage with, to ask:

What needs to be seen, heard, healed or transformed in me? In us? In our relationship with our world? Or, how can we listen to the land? To the wind? To the dead? To the threads of life that want to weave us in and co-create?" ~ Julie Coren

Stories Come to Us... + September Playlist Letter

During the Pandemic, I took a class with Marissa Chibas called Seeking the Duende and Claiming our Mythic Stories. Marissa is a wonderful artist, teacher, and filmmaker (A Cuban Documentary) and the title of the class intrigued me. Then I read her class description -- “Stories come to us because t...

When we enter the terrain of our bodies through subtle, sensation-based movement and receptivity practices, we enter our deepest possibility and the language of flesh and soul.

Come.  Breathe.  Feel.  Sense.  Imagine.  And Receive.

Please join me for this nourishing one-hour weekly class in which we will cultivate our own personal practice of subtle movement, sensation tracking, and relationship building with the depths of who we are.

I remember the first time I felt my wildness after a long time of not feeling it. I was in a Dance Alive movement workshop with Mariane Karou.

She guided us to move from our tailbone - to let our tailbones lead our movement - for at least 45 minutes. It seemed like forever – in the best possible way. I felt like a pig rolling around in the mud and it felt good.

I imagine that through this movement I was accessing an older part of my brain and a different part of my nervous system, and connecting to my more instinctual self. This connection was so nourishing.

Afterwards, I felt balanced and the script running my mind disappeared for a while. There is so much good in being a human-animal, in accessing the evolutionary history we hold in our bodies.

Movement is a potent doorway for remembering our wholeness.

You, sent out beyond your recall,
go to the limits of your longing.
Embody me.
Flare up like a flame
and make big shadows I can move in.
Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror.
Just keep going. No feeling is final.
Don’t let yourself lose me.
Nearby is the country they call life.
You will know it by its seriousness.
Give me your hand.

“Deep imagery is a dimension with its own integrity, and although we may try to control it and manipulate it the way we have learned to do with the sensed world, we must remember that it itself is fully alive, that it has its own inherent intelligence, and that it is deeply organic, touching closely those places from which our very being springs.”

— Eligio Stephen Gallegos, Animals of the Four Windows

“Yet even now mythology emerges as the legacy of a whole planet. To understand other people and other cultures and the images we share - and fail to share- with our fellows, we must relearn an aboriginal language, the universal tongue of the human imagination. With its inexhaustible vocabulary of symbol and story, it is at once our ancestral birthright and the ever-brimming well of dreams into which we look to find our future.”

-- Stephen Larsen, The Mythic Imagination: The question for Meaning Through Personal Mythology

I realize it was my ‘yes’ to the wind that started it all, that I was forever changed by the rattle, and the rust, and the call of life drawing me into one of its oldest and fiercest stories which begins:
‘See me. Hear me. Meet me.’

Embodying the stories we carry, and our imagination, can open a doorway into the mystery. It can open up our life and our understanding of our wholeness in deeply nourishing and surprising ways.
