In ABA, we look at the function behind a behavior, the why, before deciding how to support change. 💡

Most behaviors fall into one of four categories:
1️⃣ Sensory
2️⃣ Escape
3️⃣ Access to Tangibles
4️⃣ Attention

Understanding the function helps us support kids with empathy, clarity, and effectiveness. 💙

Looking to build lasting skills and behaviors? Positive reinforcement is one of our favorite tools in the ABA toolbox! 💛

When something good happens right after a behavior, it increases the chance of that behavior happening again. Think: praise, a high-five, or a favorite toy. 🎉

💬 Example: A child says “help” instead of crying, and receives assistance right away. That “help” is now more likely next time!

At Lucid, we focus on things like communication, daily routines, emotional regulation, and social skills, always with the goal of increasing independence and improving quality of life.

While following instructions can be a helpful skill, it’s never the goal in isolation. Respect, collaboration, and meaningful progress come first1

ABA Term Tuesday💡

Generalization: Generalization means a client can use a skill in different places, with different people, or in new situations, not just during therapy.
For example, if a child learns to ask for help in session and does it at home or school too, that’s generalization, and it’s a huge win!🏆

Prompting: Prompting is when we gently support a client as they learn a new skill, like giving a verbal reminder, showing how something is done, or offering a visual cue. The goal is always to *fade* the prompts over time so that the client can complete the task confidently and independently! ✅

Reinforcement: Encouraging a skill by pairing it with something positive.
*When something we do gets us to something we like (positive reinforcement), or away from something we dislike (negative reinforcement), we are more likely to do it again in the future. That's reinforcement!*✅

Myth or Truth?

Many people think that ABA therapy is only used, or is only helpful, for young children and toddlers. While this is a large portion of the clients who normally receive ABA therapy, this is not the only population that can benefit! ABA can help people of all ages develop and hone crucial skills, improve communication, and enhance overall quality of life! 💡
