A common mistake I see in my work with clients who are using a real food, holistic nutrition approach to resolve the root cause of health issues such as acid reflux, heartburn, GERD or EOE is a tendency to cut out too much at once without a solid understanding of what TO actually eat, or what to replace with the foods you are cutting out.

Believe it or not, UNDER-eating is actually a far too common issue with this eating style...and it can definitely lead to further issues down the line, or backfire in the quest to resolve the root causes of these same health issues you're working towards resolving.

This journey is NOT about cutting calories, eating low calorie or low fat or otherwise eating in a way that feels excessively restrictive or leaves you feeling deprived.

Over the years I have learned that nutrition and certain related habits, planning systems and lifestyle changes have a HUGE impact on how I feel. I'm not just talking about how I physically feel (and look), although that is certainly nice and what usually comes to mind first when making these types of changes.

The bottom line is these nutrition and lifestyle changes have made me into a new person. I'm talking dramatically improved mood, mental clarity, energy, focus, productivity…

I barely recognize the stressed out, irritable, anxious person I was for most of my teenage and adult life. It makes me a little sad to think that I used to think operating that way was simply normal and the way life was supposed to be...and that it can be so ridiculously simple to change all that.

I learned a ton on my health journey the last 6+ years (through my own research, studying in a certification program, working with a number of functional doctors and trying A LOT of different diets, protocols and various systems). It was fun for me to try all that because I'm a bit of a health geek and I love learning.

That being said, there are very specific things I would do, in a very specific way if I had to start from scratch tomorrow to reboot my health with a holistic/root-cause approach.

And even though I made such tremendous progress the last few years and got my health to a great place, sometimes even I have a desire and need to "start over" or hit the reset button in a mini way. Do you believe in New Year’s Resolutions? I don’t…

Yes, it can help to capitalize on the natural “fresh start” energy that the first of a new month brings & even more so a new year.

However, this year I skipped goal setting & focused on SYSTEMS…continuing the habits, processes, and routines for improving my health that were already on autopilot from prior years, + setting some new mini challenges and temporary habit sprints.

So far, it’s been one of my most transformative years ever.

I also learned an important mindset shift:
The goals themselves are not actually what matter. What matters most is actually committing to the journey of working towards that ultimate outcome.

What about you? Do you set formal goals for the new year?

Or do you prefer to focus more on the SYSTEMS and habits that will get you there?

You may find it odd that I am talking about New Year’s Resolutions and January planning now, in mid-November. This is not a mistake!

The doors are now open for enrollment in my coaching program Real Food Reboot. The next cohort kicks off the week of November 28th, which is the week after Thanksgiving in the U.S.

The weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas are actually the PERFECT time to get a head start on setting yourself up for a health reboot in the New Year.

That’s because Phase 1 “PREPARE” is actually not focused on restrictive dieting whatsoever.

Even better, the eating habits and other SYSTEMS and routines you install during that phase will actually leave you feeling far better after any holiday sweet treats and big meals you rightfully choose to enjoy this time of year.

A nice “positive side effect” of these changes is you will also likely feel less overwhelmed, more productive, improved energy and mental clarity, and more…which we can all use a little more of this time of year, am I right?

Happy Halloween! Friendly reminder that you are 100% empowered to make whatever choices you want today when it comes to indulging in special holiday treats including Halloween candy.

That’s right, you just received a permission slip from a holistic nutritionist to eat candy if you want ;) I am not here to convince anyone to not eat sugar.

A big part of the journey to optimal health is getting ourselves to the point that we naturally make healthy choices for what we put in our bodies at least 80-90% of the time, without needing to think much about it, it simply happens on autopilot.

That leaves room for about 10-20% of the time to make conscious choices to eat whatever we want. Even if it’s Halloween candy.

That said, if you are currently actively working on overcoming sugar cravings as part of implementing an anti-inflammatory diet to improve your health, I commend you and fully support you in that decision.

Sugar has truly addictive properties on our systems, and in recent decades, it has become even more prevalent in our society than ever before in human history.

While I do think it’s very important to separate the guilt from any of our eating choices, the truth is that taking a total break from it altogether, even if it’s temporary, is often an important step in the process.

You are not missing anything if you choose NOT to have Halloween candy this year.

I have gone many years without having any candy at all on Halloween. There is no reason you can’t enjoy this and other upcoming holidays while choosing to stay away from sugar.

If you are actively trying to avoid sugar altogether this Halloween, check out the photos in this post for my top pointers on how to overcome cravings if/when they come up this year, today or at any point in this upcoming holiday season.
