I chuckled audibly as I created this post. If you would have told me 5 years ago I'd be creating a "chemotherapy infusion day essentials" post because of MY personal experience, I think I would have questioned if I was in the right universe.
But alas! Here we are! And not only is this a post dedicated to some of the most niche parts of autoimmunity, but I also recorded an entire podcast episode with explanations, tips + tricks, and other things you might not consider when it comes to NMOSD and autoimmunity.
Episode 205 of Brain Diet: NMOSD Q&A is available on your favorite audio platform!

"Restriction must be the best way, right?"

I think many people's tendency to be "all-or-nothing" thinkers makes subtraction to them the superior option- decreasing and eliminating will equate to perfection! (❌ wrong)

But sometimes this approach forces us to miss out on both the NUTRIENTS in food as well as the JOY from food.

So get MORE of the things that work in your favor.
And still enjoy the foods that make you happy.

We live in such a *visual centric* world.
The world uses visuals to make so many assumptions about people...
Health being one of them.
But what you see is never the whole picture.
This goes for ::everyone::
Every single person is more complex than just their appearance.
Some people have amazing aspects to their health that you'll never see (but they'll know.)
And some people have incredibly difficult challenges in their health that you'll never see (but they'll know.)
So remember as you're presented with the way a person looks: it's a very small puzzle piece to a very large and complex puzzle.

I've gotten a few comments over the years about what I eat.
People assume that because I'm a nutrition coach I eat like a rabbit (which is what, like just carrots and lettuce? Don't get me wrong, I actually love carrots and lettuce.)
So then they're surprised when I eat a significant amount of food and calories.
But "healthy" isn't a one-size-fits-all.
So what is best for me might not be best for you. And vice versa.
This is why it's important that we have an individual understanding of

🥯Our goals
🥯Basic nutrition

If we are aware of those two things, we can navigate any menu on planet earth with confidence.
If you want to learn more about nutrition, send me a DM with the word CONSULT to schedule a free chat with me to talk about it.

BONUS MISTAKE 👇🏻

All-or-nothing thinking.
Typically when there are elements of "perfection or bust" in a person's mentality and behavior, it's can be due to a highly emotional relationship with food and one's body. This is where having a coach is hugely valuable.

Do you agree with these? 👇🏻

Kids are smart.

If we're bluffing in some way, they'll pick up on it.

If we don't *truly* love ourselves, our daughters will know.
They'll see it.
They'll feel it.

I don't want you to feel guilty if you're not quite on board with how amazing you are yet.
You can get there.
It is a unique journey every for every woman.

But I think one of the most powerful ways to change the world is to truly learn to see our bodies as amazing.
Our daughters might see it, adopt it, and be better off for it. Isn't that great?
Or they might not.
And that's ok too.
(Because remember, unique journey, right? 👆🏻)

Even if they don't follow our lead to see their bodies as super cool, at least they'll see a legitimate, living, breathing, genuine example of it.
Even if they don't believe it for themselves, it puts hope out into the universe for all those girls who might not know how to love themselves yet.

And even if they don't choose to feel the same way, at least you can give *yourself* that gift.
At least *you* can reap all the benefits from seeing your body as extraordinary.
And even if it's just for you.
Especially if it's just for you.
It's worth it.

I was talking to my 85 year old Grandpa the other day.
He was a body builder 65 years ago, back when "the gym" and "macros" were *super* niche.
I said, "Grandpa, what did you eat in those days?"
And he said "A lot of protein, fruits, and vegetables."
*This is where I paused and silently nodded with delight*
That, my friends, is one of the top, guiding principles of health.
There were health trends 65 years ago that were extreme.
There are very different trends now that are just as extreme.
And there will continue to be trends that fixate on single foods, ingredients, or behaviors.
So this year, may you remember that getting enough protein, getting enough fruits and vegetables, and incorporating foods you enjoy in addition to that will always be the best place to invest attention.
Happy 2024 🤍🍎🥑🥩🍔🥗

Those days can come on so quick.
A quick glance in the mirror and it feels like your whole day gets derailed.
But I promise you there is nothing wrong with your body.
Ever.
Bad body image is simply an error of thought.
That's it.

Two people can have the same goal and it can feel wildly different.
So I don't want to tell you exactly what to do.
But I do encourage you to set goals that are
kind.
and fun.
and make you happy.
If you decide to set goals of course.
And if you don't, that's great too.

Your body doesn't change in 5 seconds.
Lighting can though.
It can immediately change the way you and your body look.

But just because lighting can change doesn't mean you're more or less worthy.
Your body exists either way.
It's made up of parts that help you function.
And that's enough.
Your body existing.
You existing.
That's worthy.

You know it's a great day when .after.babies is involved.

As a registered nurse, mom of four kids, and group fitness instructor, she felt like she had the exercise routine down. But unable to see desired changes in her body, she finally looked into what might support her physical goals nutritionally.

She discovered the world of Macros (at the time it was more well known as IIFYM [if it fits your macros]) and began to rapidly change her physique.

Now as a successful business owner helping women use the tool of macros to transform their minds and bodies, she shares with us how to work through self sabotage when we have goals but we simply won't follow through on the efforts required to achieve them.

Amber is generous with her wisdom in this episode regarding nutrition, exercise, and how to eat in a way that empowers you. You'll want to soak up every second! Check it out on your favorite audio platform 🎤✨

I was thinking about my sisters.
How much I love them.
How grateful I am that I'm tied to them.
And how much I think they're the best no matter what.
My sisters.... I don't care what they weigh.
I don't care if they got ready or rolled out of bed.
I just love them. Period. No conditions.

But I see it a lot-
People wanting to change the way they look so that other people will think they're beautiful.
So that others will like them and accept them.
When at the end of the day... the people they're trying to please matter the very least.

Sometimes old patterns for me say "hello" and I feel an urgency to lose 15 pounds at all costs.
And every time, I ask... who is this for?
Do the people that *really matter* to me care?
And the answer is always no.

Ben loves me.
My family loves me.
And my body is strong and functioning so well.
So I quickly quiet those urges to please an ambiguous audience who doesn't even care about me.

So when assessing a weight loss goal (especially if it feels urgent) spend some time considering who it's for.
And if it's for people that don't genuinely love and care about you, send that goal on its merry way.

I used to think eating healthy was the same as losing weight.
That they were one and the same.
If you were eating healthy, you couldn't have any other possible reason than weight management (preferably in a decreasing direction.)
This, of course, was a result of me over time entwining my beliefs about my worth with how I looked and what I ate.
But the second I took a step back and looked at nutrition as a scientific process that I could use to help myself in just about any meaningful way, everything changed.
Food could help me get stronger.
Food could help me lose weight.
Food could help me gain weight.
Food could help my immune system be more robust.
Food could help my bones be strong.
Food could help me have less pain.
Understanding food from a simple scientific perspective gave me the power to live my very best life.
Food is the coolest.

I learned *a lot* from having babies.
One of them was how much your heart can simply explode from love.
But another was how it didn't help me at all thinking about how important sleep was when I wasn't getting any of it.
So I just decided to not think that thought anymore.
I decided "I'm strong, I've got this, I just have to make it one more [hour, minute, second, etc.]"
And though that didn't help me sleep any more, it helped me empower myself in a challenging situation.
So yes, sleep is important.
But you don't need to keep yourself up at night thinking that ✨

"Should I exercise with autoimmunity?"
As always, it's a nuanced answer.
But the bottom line is to always honor your current body AND future body.

My birthday is coming up.
The big {3-0} and I am SO excited.
I can't wait to be 30.
As I've been anticipating this milestone I've put a lot of thought into who I am and how I operate.
This one above? 👆🏻
A big part of how I operate.
Now, I know, this is a left-fielder from my usual nutrition and autoimmune content.
But as a life coach, it's these ideas that shape every part of my health.
In that spirit, I've recorded a podcast episode sharing 30 things similar to this that have put me here, where I am, living the life I'm living.
About to turn 30. 😌

And guess what.
I bet there is someone you know and love with autoimmunity.
It's common. (And it can be hard).
But it's nothing to keep in the dark.
We're all in this together.
