🦃 Trying to have a healthier holiday?

🦃 Go easy on the gravy. Gravy can contain high amounts of sodium, especially if it is from a can. A little can go a long way!

🍞 Swap out refined rolls for whole grain rolls. Whole grains have more fiber and nutrients while refined grains lose those during processing.

🍷 Drinking alcohol? Remember to drink water to hydrate! Water also helps to cut back on calories.

🍎 When baking desserts, try using unsweetened applesauce or mashed rips bananas instead of butter. This helps to cut back on the amount of saturated fat.

🏃‍♀️ Plan an activity that will get you up and moving. Go for a walk after dinner, dance in the kitchen (my fave), play catch, or sign up for a Turkey Trot!

🦃 And remember, the holiday is only one day out of the 365 days in a year.

♥️ If you decide to celebrate the holiday as usual, that is OK too! Give yourself grace and enjoy your time with those who mean most!

🐟 Did you know that omega-3 fatty acids can be found in food sources rather than just in supplements?

🐠 Omega-3 is one of 2 essential fatty acids that our bodies need from our diet.

🐟 Omega-3 can be found in food sources like:

✔️ Fatty, cold water fish such as tuna and salmon

✔️Walnuts

✔️Flaxseed

✔️Chia seeds

🐟 Some ways to incorporate these into your diet include:

✔️ Add flaxseed to a favorite smoothie

✔️ Mix chia seeds in with oatmeal

✔️ Pack walnuts as a part of a balanced snack for school or work

✔️ Cook a delicious salmon dinner or grab a tuna bowl on the go

🐟 Omega-3 fatty acids have been associated with lower levels of inflammation and can help protect against cardiovascular disease and stroke.

🐠 Getting the nutrients we need from a variety of food sources rather than supplements nourishes our bodies with even more of the nutrients we need.

🥦 Cutting out entire food groups can make it harder to get all the nutrients we need.

🥦 Make sure to balance your plate with the right amount of lean protein, whole grains, fruit, vegetables, and low fat dairy.

💧And don’t forget your water! It is after all the most important nutrient that our body needs.

💜 Research studies have shown early signs of atherosclerosis (the build up of plaque in arteries) developing in adolescents and even children.

♥️ Atherosclerosis can lead to heart attack, stroke, peripheral artery disease, and erectile dysfunction.

💛 Some modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease and heart health include:

- Nutrition & Diet
- Physical Activity
- Blood Cholesterol Levels
- Blood Pressure
- Type 2 Diabetes
- Smoking
- Stress
- Alcohol

💩 Since only around ~11% of American adults get enough fruits and veggies, this may also indicate a lower intake of fiber.

💩 When we don’t get enough fiber in our diets, it can contribute to constipation.

💩 Complications of constipation can include the development of hemorrhoids, f***l impaction, diverticulitis, and a**l fissures.

💩 Making sure to eat enough fiber rich foods including fruits and vegetables, along with whole grains, nuts, and seeds, along with plenty of water and daily movement can help to prevent constipation.

♥️ Plus, getting enough fiber provides many health benefits including helping to lower cholesterol, balance blood sugars, and keep you full longer.

💜 When we are working towards creating healthy habits, there will be times when we stumble.

💜 When this happens, it is important to remember to be gentle with ourselves.

💜 It takes time to implement change, so we must be patient and give ourselves grace.

💜 This is something that I remind my clients about when they face challenges while they are creating new habits, whether it is to improve their cholesterol, lower their blood pressure, or fit back into their clothes.

💜 I remind them (and myself) that it is what we do on most days that counts.

💜 Change takes time, but as long as we get back up and keep moving forward, it will all be worth it.
