“[Al-Anon’s] Step One says, ‘We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.’ This Step has helped me accept my situation with the alcoholics in my life. Both my parents are alcoholics; one has been sober for almost five years, and the other has had more struggles with the disease. While growing up I would try to control the alcoholics in my life and didn’t understand why my nagging and judgment didn’t make them stop right then and there.
“When I first came to Alateen, we read the Steps. That’s when I heard Step One for the first time. After hearing about it, I thought about how it related to my life. At the next meeting, we read a passage about trying to control the alcoholic, and it clicked in my brain. No matter what age I am or how mature I may be, I can’t control another person, especially the alcoholics in my life. When this clicked, I started reading other Alateens’ experiences with Step One, and that helped me better understand it.
“Accepting being powerless over alcohol helps us understand that the alcoholic’s drinking is not our fault. I learned that Step One isn’t about defeat, it’s about serenity. Working through Step One allows me to feel whole and at peace. The key word in Step One that helped me understand was ‘powerless.’”
