So true

“It dawned on me that, if I could refocus a small part of the attention and care that I had given to others onto myself, I might be able to feel better about who I am. The greatest challenge of all has been to learn to accept and love myself, unconditionally and without any of the self-destructive behaviors I learned while living with this disease. Today I can see the benefit of taking care of myself first.”

What Does Serenity Look Like to You?

Upon entering Al-Anon, we may have equated “serene” with “boring.” The disease of alcoholism may have distorted our sense of stability. June’s blog topic is, “What does serenity look like to you?”

Please share your thoughts below. If you want to share anonymously, go to:

Gratitude is one way to get our focus off what’s wrong in our lives and change our outlook into a more positive one. Share with us what you’re grateful for in five words or less.

“Before Al-Anon I trusted everyone and no one. How could that be? I had no boundaries, so I blabbed and complained to anyone who would listen. Yet, I didn’t share with those who mattered in my life, because I might be questioned and held accountable. I rarely let anyone see who I really was.

“My husband had an affair the summer before I started attending Al-Anon. I allowed myself to be manipulated. I believed the lies I was told and convinced myself that what I saw and heard was wrong. After discovering the truth, I had all kinds of suspicions and trust issues. Coming to Al-Anon changed that.”

“[Al-Anon’s] Step One says, ‘We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.’ This Step has helped me accept my situation with the alcoholics in my life. Both my parents are alcoholics; one has been sober for almost five years, and the other has had more struggles with the disease. While growing up I would try to control the alcoholics in my life and didn’t understand why my nagging and judgment didn’t make them stop right then and there.

“When I first came to Alateen, we read the Steps. That’s when I heard Step One for the first time. After hearing about it, I thought about how it related to my life. At the next meeting, we read a passage about trying to control the alcoholic, and it clicked in my brain. No matter what age I am or how mature I may be, I can’t control another person, especially the alcoholics in my life. When this clicked, I started reading other Alateens’ experiences with Step One, and that helped me better understand it.

“Accepting being powerless over alcohol helps us understand that the alcoholic’s drinking is not our fault. I learned that Step One isn’t about defeat, it’s about serenity. Working through Step One allows me to feel whole and at peace. The key word in Step One that helped me understand was ‘powerless.’”

“Freedom and Peace at Any Age,” “The Forum,” April 2025

All Al-Anon Family Group members study and practice applying the Steps to their lives to recover from someone else’s alcoholism. This Alateen member’s sharing demonstrates how applying the Steps can be beneficial to anyone, regardless of their age.
