Rocket Biryani - Flavour of love

Rocket Biryani is a concept I have been dreaming of for a while now. While it has changed forms in my head, the core idea has remained the same: Provide a safe space for people in the community, with a Pakistani twist. Being a Pakistani and familiar with the rich tapestry of cultures, languages and cuisines, I want to share that with the people around me, while at the same time providing a refuge for the misfits, the non-conformists, the marginalized and the outcasts. I want this to be a place where people can eat Pakistani food and enjoy chai all day long. Where people come together and become a part of the family that our world so desperately needs.

The reason for focusing on the food, the Biryani in Rocket Biryani was simple: I wanted to honor my mother, and my mother in law and the millions of the women in my homeland and around the world that chose to forego their potential and settled in domestic bliss. These unsung women who cooked for their children and kept their houses in order are no less heroes in my eyes than any other woman and by choosing to recreate their recipes and taste, I am trying to honor their impact on my life, my family’s life and the life of every person I know.

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 Pandemic has proven to be a spanner in the works, forcing us all to retreat to the (dis)comfort of our homes, and sometimes, bedrooms. Uncertainty prevails and people are worried about the future. Thus, it has proven challenging to work on the scale I had originally intended. This has left me shattered, heart-broken and depressingly crazy. However, I am still here, and I can still cook. So in these uncertain times, I will be cooking and baking Pakistani food, and international food with a dash of Pakistani Masala and delivering to people as random acts of kindness.

Godspeed. Saadia Farooq
