Today we have started the a new MDT collaboration group for private practice - Building a truly effective multi-disciplinary team (MDT) isn’t just about bringing professionals together — it’s about creating a space where expertise is integrated, challenged, and continuously refined.
In our work across neurodevelopmental assessment and support, establishing a specialist MDT for peer and group supervision will be transformative. When clinicians from different disciplines collaborate — psychology, psychiatry, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, education — the depth of formulation and clinical insight is elevated significantly.
Regular peer supervision provides more than governance. It creates a reflective, psychologically safe environment where complex cases can be explored through multiple lenses. This strengthens diagnostic accuracy, supports differential thinking, and ensures that formulation remains person-centred and neuroaffirmative.
Grounding this work in gold standard practice is essential. That means aligning with current evidence-based research, maintaining fidelity to recognised frameworks (e.g. structured diagnostic tools, ICD/DSM alignment), and committing to ongoing professional development. Training is not a one-off — it is embedded, continuous, and responsive to emerging evidence.
What makes the difference is culture:
• Openness to challenge and reflective discussion
• Respect for each discipline’s expertise
• Commitment to best outcomes for individuals and families
• Continuous learning and accountability
When done well, an MDT is not just a team — it becomes a system of excellence. One that holds clinical integrity, reduces bias, and ultimately leads to more accurate, meaningful, and supportive outcomes for those we work with.
