दूसरे नवरात्र में मां के ब्रह्मचारिणी एवं तपश्चारिणी रूप को पूजा जाता है।
ब्रह्मचारिणी का अर्थ है वह जो असीम, अनन्त में विद्यमान, गतिमान है। एक ऊर्जा जो न तो जड़ न ही निष्क्रिय है, किन्तु वह जो अनन्त में विचरण करती है। यह बात समझना अति महत्वपूर्ण है – एक गतिमान होना, दूसरा विद्यमान होना। यही ब्रह्मचर्य का अर्थ है। इसका अर्थ यह भी है कि तुच्छता, निम्नता में न रहना अपितु पूर्णता से रहना। कौमार्यावस्था ब्रह्मचर्य का पर्यायवाची है क्योंकि उसमें आप एक सम्पूर्णता के समक्ष हैं न कि कुछ सीमित के समक्ष। वासना हमेशा सीमित बँटी हुई होती है, चेतना का मात्र सीमित क्षेत्र में संचार। इस प्रकार ब्रह्मचारिणी सर्व-व्यापक चेतना है।
