Vaccine doubts?
👩⚕️Dr. Marina Khrizman, a pediatric neurologist & BREASTFEEDING mom, recently had her second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Her daughter was born during the height of the pandemic and she previously had COVID. She nursed the entire time, but stating "it was so stressful trying to prevent my 2 kids from getting sick as well."
She has shared:
"Being trained as a pediatrician, I am very comfortable evaluating vaccines & weighing their risks/benefits. Having considered my daughter's safety, I felt comfortable getting the vaccine & continuing to nurse her. The vaccine has been found to be highly effective & safe in the clinical trials. Unfortunately, pregnant & breastfeeding women were not included in the vaccine clinical trials; this is typical for clinical trials in general. So, we don't have a lot of information from those trials for these 2 groups.
Physiologically speaking, it doesn't make sense to me that this vaccine would be of danger to my daughter.
The mRNA vaccine is not a live virus which means that there's no danger of myself or my baby getting an actual COVID infection from it. Any small amount of vaccine ingredients that pass through breast milk (if any pass through at all) should be broken down in the baby's stomach without ill effects.
In fact, there is a possibility that the vaccine may offer some protection to a breastfeeding child. There are studies going on right now on whether breast milk can pass on antibodies produced in response to a maternal COVID-19 infection or vaccination. Breast milk after vaccination may actually carry some amount of direct protection for our little ones against COVID."
What would you say to other breastfeeding moms deciding whether or not to get the vaccine?
"Your child deserves a healthy mama-this is your best way to protect yourself and family. There's a lot of great information and resources to get your questions answered about this."
Thanks to Dr. Marina Khrizman for sharing her thoughts and experience.
