Had the opportunity to partner with Violet on developing a collection of trainings for addressing mental health in rural communities.

Attending graduate school in New Mexico was such an eye opener for me on the challenges faced to provide quality care. Grateful for a grad program that embedded us in the community through interprofessional immersion programs and a minor in Integrated Behavioral Health. This collection has a special meaning for me; to be able to support scaling up quality care in all communities, not just those that are densely populated.

Spent some time this week talking about the future of psychology at the American Psychological Association Think Tank on Educational Equity and Workforce Development.

So much respect for the reflective and intentional conversations with Oswaldo Moreno, Ph.D. Giovanni Ramos Brianna A. Baker, Ph.D

Loved hearing insights on how much psychological science is needed in so many areas from Akua K. Boateng, PhD & Jalisa Washington-Price .

The best part was meeting new faces and chatting about ways to expand psychology on innovation and expanding access.

Of course I had to get a picture with two people I deeply admire Dr. Elizabeth Louis & incoming APA President Wendi Williams . A true inspiration and longtime mentor, so excited for her leadership.

Thank you for the invite Dr. Maysa Akbar Debra Kawahara, PhD Arthur C. Evans, Ph.D. !

Last week American Psychological Association released “Ethical guidance for AI in the professional practice of health service psychology” developed in collaboration with APA’s Mental Health Technology Advisory Committee, APA staff and psychologist across various board/committees of governance. Please share widely with your networks. We recognize this document will need to evolve in real time, so feedback is appreciated.

This guidance offers a starting point—not a prescription—for ethically integrating AI into clinical practice based on APA’s code of ethics. While a broader systems approach is urgently needed, this framework equips psychologists to critically evaluate emerging tools and align them with the values that ground our work. My hope is that others will build upon it, evolving how we practice with both innovation and integrity.

A HUGE thank you to all who supported the development of this document Leanna Fortunato, Ph.D. Laura Moore Lamminen, PhD, ABPP, Clifton Berwise, PhD, Kamieka Gabriel, Keely Kolmes, Psy.D. Aaron Jones, M.A. C. Vaile Wright, Ph.D., Mariann Burnetti-Atwell, Deborah Baker Corbin Evans, Tony Habash, Dennis P. Stolle, JD, PhD, Lauren Caldwell Sommers Dominique H. Wendy Williams Andrew Strickland Lindsay Childress-Beatty, CAE
& especially to the members. An amazing group of dedicated volunteers who are committed to making sure psychologists have what they need to practice, teach, engage in research & advocacy with technology if they choose: Andrea Graham, PhD, Ashleigh Golden, PsyD, RPsych, HSP, ACT, Ashley B. Batastini, Ph.D., David Cooper, PsyD, Victoria Bangieva, PhD, Dr. Charmain Jackman, Ph.D. Eric Kuhn Ellen Fitzsimmons-Craft, PhD, FAED, LP, Hilary Weingarden Karen Fortuna Marie Onakomaiya, PhD MPH Pooja Raghani, PsyD, MBI Kay Nikiforova

It is an honor to lead this group!

Wait until you see what we have cooking next!

Last month I had the honor of presenting to the faculty at Hampton University about coping strategies for navigating academia: “Excellent & Exhausted”.

I asked all of the faculty a question: “What would it look like for you to flourish?” I’m asking everyone reading this, that same question today. What would it take for you to thrive, to flourish? Would it be time, community, money, relationship, quiet, a slowed down schedule etc. Reflect on it for a moment.

Now, I challenge you to commit to one small step, no matter how tiny, that will lead you to flourishing.

Remember: “You were not just born to center your entire existence on work
and labor. You were born to heal, to grow, to be of service to yourself and community, to practice, to experiment, to create, to have space, to dream, and to connect.” —Tricia Hersey

Huge thank you & for the invitation!

I recently had the opportunity and honor to speak at the Council of Clinical Health Psychology Training Programs 18th annual mid-winter meeting. Such robust conversations about how we are and how we should be preparing psychologists for the future.

I ended the talk asking psychologists to reflect on our ethical principal of non-maleficence, which is the principle of “do no harm”. I asked them to consider if we are not preparing psychologists to leverage technology in their clinical work or we potentially perpetuating harm? I don’t have all the answers, but I do think this is something we have to grapple with as a field. I absolutely believe there are pro’s and con’s to leveraging technology in healthcare AND I believe avoidance is not the answer. We need competencies, ethical frameworks and digital literacy education for clinicians so that we can criticality evaluate these pro’s and con’s.

Other Key Takeaway’s
- Psychologists DO want AI policies they can look to as a guide for their clinical and research work and for the supervision of this work.

- Psychologists DO want instruction on how to think through competencies in AI note taking and medical records.

- Psychologists DO want to be involved and present in commercial platform decisions ...to increase access and impact.

- Final call for comments for the Ethics codes revisions. Let your voice be heard about not just the present, but preparing for the future. Call for comments closes on 3/19/25: https://lnkd.in/gZCHgzMq

I’m curious to hear from other clinicians, how should we be preparing trainees for the future?

Thanks to Danielle Miller, PhD for the invitation to speak
