Every single week for the rest of my life, I have to do plasma infusions that take about 3 hours because I have common variable immune deficiency. These infusions aren’t fun and cause many bad side effects. My body does not produce antibodies to fight off viruses, colds, etc. I am sick a lot. There are so many of us (my fellow zebras) who also have to do this to survive. IDF is constantly searching for ways to make this better for us. I’m a zebra! In medical school, many doctors learn the saying, “When you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras,” and are taught to focus on the likeliest possibilities when making a diagnosis, not the unusual ones. However, sometimes physicians need to look for a zebra. People with primary immunodeficiency (PI) are the zebras of the medical world. So the Immune Deficiency Foundation (IDF) says THINK ZEBRA! Common variable immune deficiency (CVID) is a disorder that impairs the immune system. People with CVID are highly susceptible to infection from foreign invaders such as bacteria, or more rarely, viruses and often develop recurrent infections, particularly in the lungs, sinuses, and ears.

Primary immunodeficiencies (PI) are a group of more than 400 rare, chronic disorders in which part of the body’s immune system is missing or functions improperly. While not contagious, these diseases are caused by hereditary or genetic defects. Some types affect a single part of the immune system, while others may affect one or more components of the system.
