WHAT TO DO IF YOU THINK YOUR CHILD HAS MEASLES?

Measles usually starts with a fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes that leads to a rash. If someone in your family has measles symptoms:

Keep them away from family members that are not sick.

Everyone in the house should stay home to not get your neighbors or people outside of your home sick.

Call a doctor or hospital right away to let them know someone in your home is sick with measles. They will give you instructions.

If the person who is sick gets rapidly worse or has any of symptoms below take them to the emergency department of a hospital immediately:

Trouble breathing
Pain when breathing or coughing
Dehydration
Fever or headache will not stop
Confusion, decreased alertness, or severe weakness
Blue color around the mouth, low energy, or difficulty feeding (for young children)

Have someone call before you arrive to clinic or hospital. Let them know a person with measles is coming.

Measuring your blood pressure is an important step toward keeping a healthy blood pressure. High blood pressure often has no symptoms. Checking your blood pressure is the only way to know for sure whether it is too high.

If you learn that you have high blood pressure, you should take steps to control your blood pressure. This will lower your risk for heart disease and stroke.

By making these lifestyle changes, you can help keep your blood pressure levels healthy:

Get regular physical activity. Staying physically active is one of the best things you can do for your health. Physical activity helps keep your heart and blood vessels strong. It also can help you keep a healthy weight.

Do not smoke. Smoking damages your blood vessels and greatly increases your risk of not only high blood pressure but also heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.

Eat healthy foods. Choosing healthy meal and snack options can help you avoid high blood pressure and its complications. Be sure to eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Keep a healthy weight. Having overweight or obesity means your heart must work harder to pump blood and oxygen around the body. Staying at a healthy weight reduces the stress on your heart and reduces your risk for heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.

If you would like to have your blood pressure checked or are overdue for a check, please call your primary care office today and schedule!

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection spread to people through the bite of blacklegged ticks.

Typical symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans. If left untreated, infection can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system.

A small bump or redness at the site of a tick bite that occurs immediately and resembles a mosquito bite, is common. This irritation generally goes away in 1-2 days and is not a sign of Lyme disease.

Lyme disease is most common in the Northeast, mid-Atlantic, and upper-Midwest regions of the United States.
