Alrighty, Ripley has officially upgraded to the Dexcom G6. So far so good, this theoretically means he doesn't need finger pricks unless his symptoms don't match the cgm readings......just until im comfortable with that ill sporadically finger prick and see what the go is, it also means that his cCGM lasts 10 days instead of 7 days....It was a rough swap as he hates anything new but he did well!

Alright important update for Ripleys diabetes. As of the 8/3/2022 Ripleys dexcom cgm
Will be upgraded from a G5 to a G6, this means his device that reads his blood sugar levels will be changed every 10 days instead of 7 and he will no longer require finger pricks unless his symptamic that conflicts with what the data says on the cgm. Which is wonderful because for Ripley, that means at least minimum two less needle pricks at day sometimes more. But as I always do on here I will post a how to use this new upgrade, in the event I am unable to do so. And that’s what the next few videos will address.

Diabetes isn't just a balancing act of food and insulin, below is a list of factors outside of that

A sideways arrow indicates a neutral effect. Not every individual will respond in the same way (and even within the same person, you may be different from day-to-day or over time). Certain factors may also apply more to type 1 vs. type 2 diabetes
Factors with up and down arrows are of course the most challenging - they may increase blood glucose or decrease it.

Diabetes fact. What a person with type 1 needs to live, is the very same thing that could kill them.

The amount of insulin on the left is 2 units and may be all that is needed when a child with Type 1 Diabetes eats about 40 carbohydrates. The amount of insulin on the right is 10 units and is enough to be fatal in a matter of a few hours. This is the difference between life and death. There’s not much margin for error.

Dosing decisions are required every time a T1D eats, and sometimes even more often then that.

Sit on that for a minute . . .

Every meal, every single day, every holiday, every party, every vacation.

I saw another T1D mumma make one of these for school, I have already done a similar one before this one which the kindergarten currently have, but this one is much better, ugh took longer than I thought to make, but so worth it. This will be printed off and laminated and handed to key family members to see Ripley regularly and kindergarten/school to go on the wall

(Important phone numbers cropped out only on this post, not on the printed laminated copy's)
If anyone sees any spelling errors on this please feel free to inform me

great things to come and I'm getting so excited that things might start to become a little easier for Ripley so as you all know Ripley has a cgm, right now he uses a Dexcom g5, and we love it but it still means he needs finger pricking (not many but some) well, there is a g6, its not yet NDSS funded and that's ok but that one doesn't require finger pricking, now both the g5 ang g6 require you to lug around a phone or a reader which is a pain in the ass for young children and educators like teachers and aids and whilst you can still get readings if you have a watch, you will only get these readings if the cgm phone or reader is in range with the wearer of the cgm, well, now they have the g6 (hopefully one day covered by ndss) this bad boy now runs directly to a watch which means it ditches the need to carry a phone around and the wearer of the cgm can just wear the watch! i think this is fantastic.

Now onto something i think is even more exciting is, around 10 years ago i believe they approved a tubeless pump for Australia (Which America have been using this whole time) called the Omnipod. I read about this device on day 2 of Ripley's diagnosis and was devastated to find out that after 9 years they still hadn't stocked this in Australia yet, However yesterday i read that all that is about to change and they are releasing it sometime this year and we are here for it, for a while i was considering a pump that had tubes and had to be lugged around but i really wasn't a fan but this Omnipod for 12 months I've been watching American diabetic tiktockers/youtubers/instagramers and ive just wanted this more and more for Ripley. I have no idea how much it will costs if its not covered by NDSS but I've signed up for emails none the less and hopefully its something we can look at in the near or distant future but regardless its progress and I'm here for it!!

Provided he has insulin he can eat everything you do, He just might have to have insulin 15-30 before hand and maybe again later if we miss calculated the carbohydrates in the food he ate

Ok so it’s taken me nearly a year of adjusting to remember that although Ripley is the first type one diabetic in our family’s, “the Kendells, the Clark’s, the Thaxter’s and the young’s” that it is here now and we need to test everyone for diabetic markers and find out which family line could be at risk now or in the future so we can keep a closer eye out for the signs.

Also I’ve started watching more closely to how his insulin works because I was sure I knew when it was working at it’s best but this first experiment today has proven me wrong and it’s all about learning do we can get better daily management of Ripleys diabetes and quality of life

Ripley is type 1, There was no way of knowing how to avoid him Developing it. But we believe he got it after getting sick.

I always thought diabetes was either genetic or diet, they never told us in school the difference between type 1 & 2
