I genuinely love what I do. Being a counsellor isn’t just my job — it’s a huge part of who I am. It’s something that’s shaped my heart, my outlook, and the way I connect with people every single day & what a journey it’s been!
When younger clients walk in with a big smile and genuine excitement to see me, it reminds me how important it is to be a safe, consistent adult in someone’s world. It’s a privilege to be that person — to be trusted, to be seen as a source of comfort and understanding for children outside of their immediate family.
Holding space for people’s most personal stories is something I never take lightly. Every time someone allows me into the depths of their experience and feelings, I feel that trust deeply. It’s amazing to sit beside someone as they share the parts of their life that they may have never shared before.
Then there are the messages — the ones that pop up on random days. “I did it!” “You’d be proud of me!” “I used the technique we talked about.” Those small updates outside of the therapy room are everything. It shows that the work doesn’t just stay within our sessions — it lives on, grows, and strengthens in the real world.
I do think about my clients — I remember the anniversaries of their loved ones, the dates of funerals, or big life events. Sometimes I find myself wondering how they’re doing long after our sessions have ended. I think that’s normal, counselling isn’t about detaching from emotion — it’s about feeling deeply with someone while helping them carry it.
There are times when I feel sad for what my clients have been through — when their pain touches my own heart — and there are times when I feel an overwhelming sense of pride watching how far they’ve come. The courage, the growth, the resilience — it’s incredible to witness. And yes, sometimes that connection comes with tears, laughter, and the occasional hug, because sometimes words just aren’t enough.
Counselling, to me, is so much more than a career. It’s a calling. It’s part of my character. It’s how I show up in the world — with empathy, curiosity, and an open heart. 💜
