🦵 Why Ankle Fracture Surgery May Be Necessary 🩺

Ankle fractures are common injuries, but some require surgical treatment to ensure proper healing and restore full function. Here’s why surgery might be the best option:

💡 Why Surgery?
When the ankle bones are severely misaligned, unstable, or fractured in multiple places, surgery helps:
1️⃣ Restore Alignment – Ensures bones heal in their proper position to maintain joint stability.
2️⃣ Prevent Arthritis – Reduces the risk of long-term complications like joint stiffness and arthritis.
3️⃣ Regain Function – Enables a faster, more reliable return to walking, running, and daily activities.

🛠️ What Happens During Surgery?
The procedure typically involves:
🔹 Placing screws, plates, or rods to stabilize the bone.
🔹 Repairing damaged ligaments if necessary.
🔹 Realigning and securing the joint for optimal healing.

🚨 Signs You May Need Surgery
Your doctor might recommend surgery if you experience:
• Severe displacement (bones are out of place).
• Open fractures (bone breaks through the skin).
• Joint instability (ankle feels unstable or “wobbly”).

🩹 Recovery After Surgery
1️⃣ Rest & immobilization in a cast or boot.
2️⃣ Gradual weight-bearing under your doctor’s guidance.
3️⃣ Physical therapy to rebuild strength and flexibility.

💬 Remember
Ankle surgery isn’t always required, but when it is, it plays a critical role in ensuring a strong, functional recovery. Always consult with a healthcare professional to determine the best treatment plan for your specific injury.

🎯 All About Bunion Surgery: What You Need to Know!

Bunions can be painful and limit your mobility. If conservative treatments don’t work, surgery might be the solution. Here’s a quick guide to bunion surgery!

What is Bunion Surgery?

Bunion surgery (also called a bunionectomy) involves correcting the deformity of the big toe joint. This relieves pain, improves function, and restores alignment.

Who Might Need It?

🔹 Severe pain that interferes with daily life
🔹 Swelling or stiffness that doesn’t improve with non-surgical methods
🔹 Trouble wearing shoes due to deformity
🔹 Progression of the bunion despite conservative care

Types of Bunion Surgery

1️⃣ Osteotomy – Realigns the bones by cutting and repositioning them.
2️⃣ Arthrodesis – Fuses the joint if arthritis is present.
3️⃣ Exostectomy – Removes the bunion without correcting alignment (less common).

What to Expect

🔹 Preparation: Imaging tests and physical exams
🔹 Procedure: Performed under local or general anesthesia
🔹 Recovery:
• Swelling and stiffness for several weeks
• Use of special footwear or crutches

Tips for Recovery

🌟 Follow your doctor’s instructions
🌟 Avoid bearing weight until cleared
🌟 Wear proper footwear post-surgery
🌟 Stay patient—healing takes time!

Whether you’re a first-timer or looking to improve your time, training for 13.1 miles takes strategy, discipline, and preparation. Here are the key steps to get started:

1️⃣ Follow a Plan:
Choose a training plan that matches your fitness level (usually 10-16 weeks). Gradually increase mileage to build endurance without risking injury.

Rest days are just as important as run days! They allow your body to rebuild and prevent overtraining.

3️⃣ Incorporate Cross-Training:
Add strength training, cycling, or swimming to build overall fitness and avoid burnout.

4️⃣ Fuel Properly:
Your body needs the right energy. Focus on whole foods, stay hydrated, and practice fueling during long runs to see what works best on race day.

5️⃣ Listen to Your Body:
Running is a mental and physical challenge. If something feels off, take a step back to avoid injury.

Ensuring safety during marathon runs involves educating runners, organizers, and spectators about precautions and protocols. Below are key areas of focus for marathon safety education:

1. Pre-Event Preparation
• Training Tips: Educate participants on proper training schedules, including gradual mileage increases, cross-training, and rest days to avoid injuries.
• Health Checks: Encourage runners to consult healthcare providers to ensure they are fit for the race, especially if they have medical conditions.
• Hydration and Nutrition: Teach runners about the importance of hydration and balanced nutrition during training and on race day. Discuss signs of dehydration and overhydration (hyponatremia).
• Gear Education: Emphasize the importance of proper running shoes, clothing, and gear for comfort and injury prevention.

2. Race-Day Precautions
• Start Line Safety: Teach runners about pacing to avoid overcrowding and injuries at the start.
• Weather Awareness: Inform participants about weather conditions and how to adjust their pace, clothing, and hydration accordingly.
• First Aid Knowledge: Educate runners and volunteers about recognizing and responding to heatstroke, hypothermia, and other medical emergencies.
• Route Familiarization: Share information about the route, including elevation changes, hydration stations, and medical aid points.

3. Emergency Preparedness
• Communication Plan: Ensure all participants

🩸 What is a Subungual Hematoma? 🩸

A subungual hematoma is a condition where blood collects under the nail, usually caused by trauma like hitting your finger or toe. This can lead to pain, swelling, and discoloration under the nail (typically dark red, purple, or black).

Symptoms to Watch For:

• Intense throbbing or pain
• Discoloration under the nail
• Swelling around the nail area

What Should You Do?

1. Small Hematomas: These often heal on their own. You can apply ice, elevate the injured finger or toe, and take over-the-counter pain relief.
2. Larger Hematomas: If the pain is severe or the discoloration covers more than 50% of the nail, seek medical attention. Dr. Jonathan Pajouh may drain the blood to relieve pressure or remove the nail.

Prevention Tips:

• Wear protective footwear for high-risk activities.
• Use caution when handling heavy objects.

Most subungual hematomas heal without complications, but be sure to monitor for signs of infection or severe pain. Feel free to call our office for a consultation at 972-726-6464.

# # # 📚 **Understanding High Ankle Sprains: What You Need to Know!** 🦶

A high ankle sprain is not your typical ankle injury. Unlike the common ankle sprain, which affects the ligaments on the outside of the ankle, a high ankle sprain involves the ligaments that connect the tibia and fibula, the two bones in your lower leg. These injuries are more severe and can require surgical repair.

**🔎 What Causes a High Ankle Sprain?**
This type of sprain often occurs during sports or activities that involve sudden twisting, turning, or a direct impact to the ankle. It’s common in athletes but can happen to anyone.

**🩹 Symptoms to Watch For:**
- Pain above the ankle
- Swelling and bruising
- Difficulty bearing weight
- Pain with upward movement of the foot

**⏳ Recovery Time:**
High ankle sprains typically take longer to heal than low ankle sprains. Recovery can range from 6 weeks to several months, depending on the severity and surgery involved.

**💡 Treatment Tips:**
- **Rest**: Avoid putting weight on the injured foot.
- **Ice**: Apply ice to reduce swelling.
- **Compression**: Use a bandage to minimize swelling.
- **Elevation**: Keep the foot elevated to help reduce swelling.
**🧑‍⚕️ When to See a Doctor:**
If you suspect a high ankle sprain, it’s crucial to consult a Podiatric foot and ankle surgeon for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Ignoring the injury can lead to chronic instability or other complications.

🏋️‍♂️ **Prevention:** Strengthen your ankles with exercises and always warm up before engaging in physical activities.

. Calf swelling, cramping, and pain
Calf swelling and cramping are frequent during pregnancy. Blood flow returning from your legs back to your heart is slowed due to the increased size of the uterus and fetus. This leads to a buildup of fluid within the legs. The following activities may help reduce swelling and discomfort:

Wearing compression stockings
Regular walking and low-impact aerobic exercise
Staying properly hydrated
Frequent stretching of the calves
Massaging the swollen area

Rarely, blood clots can occur in the legs during pregnancy. Symptoms of blood clots include persistent calf pain, swelling, possible redness, warmth, and tenderness. If you notice any of these symptoms or suspect you may have a blood clot, you should contact your physician.
