Today is World Mental Health day apparently. Though of course this should be an every day conversation.

I always say my imagination has been my greatest asset and my biggest burden. Because my tribulations with mental health and medication began when I was 14 and have become my biggest priority in life.

A lot of my work is a dance with darkness. Learning to live with it. Acknowledging that it is a core part of human existence. To poeticize it. To channel it into a force for great things.

Art really has been my greatest survival mechanism and I am so grateful to have it. And also to have people in my life who have held my hand and heart through tough times. (And the luxury of taking long drives when I need to).

Anyway there’s not much message here. Except to be kind to yourself. Be brutally honest about the things that hurt. The things that make you most vulnerable can be your greatest gift and strength. Build an unwavering relationship with your core (WIP). Love all aspects of yourself (WIP). Share your gifts. Set and respect your boundaries. Have perspective. And more than anything I’ve learned how important it is to stand strong in your convictions. And also (apparently I did have something to say today): consider pursuing joy instead of happiness. In my opinion happiness is a concept sold to us by systems that wants us to never feel satisfied so we keep on consuming. Joy is simple. Attainable. It’s a sunset. A birdsong. A giggle. A nice exchange with a stranger. Ice cream. The way water feels.
And it can fill your cup.
