My daughter & I went on a run “together” this afternoon - and this was my view for the full 3 miles. My legs may be twice as long, but they’re also more than 3.5 times older! Looks like it’s time to step up my training…

This is one of my favorite poems by Mary Oliver, and a profound reminder - what astonishing things are you missing simply because you’re not paying attention?

“Instructions for living a life.
Pay attention.
Be astonished.
Tell about it.”
- Mary Oliver

(Forever grateful to our nanny in Portland, who snapped this pic of Solveig in 2016 reading (pretending to read?) Mary Oliver to the newly-sprouted sunflowers .)

Rest. There’s been a lot of talk recently about rest – and rightfully so.

Rest is the essential counterpoint of a productive, goal-driven life. Rest is a powerful antidote to burnout. Rest is particularly important for people (like you!) who do work that can be emotionally draining, and for people (like you!) who juggle numerous roles and responsibilities. Research consistently shows that well-rested people are more productive, efficient, and creative.

Resting, for you, may mean napping or meditating or simply spending some time doing nothing at all. But rest doesn’t have to be still. Resting is not just about physical rest - mental, emotional, and spiritual rest are also key. Anything that recharges you, energizes you, and nourishes your soul IS rest. Rest can be active. It can be a hike, a game, a hobby; anything that you do simply for fun.

Take time to rest, regularly. Daily if you can. Experiment with different forms of rest.

How will you rest this weekend?

Did you know you can alter your body's physiology simply by changing your thoughts?

Imagine biting into this slice of lemon. Close your eyes. What do you feel? Is your mouth watering? Are your lips puckering?

This is the power of your mind.

Your thoughts cause real physiologic responses in your body.

The next time you're feeling overwhelmed or anxious, close your eyes, imagine a calm and peaceful scene, and watch as your body responds. What do you feel?

Are you tired of feeling harried, rushed, or overwhelmed?

Although it may seem impossible to imagine, you can keep wearing all the hats (if you choose!), maintain your productivity, AND feel better. I would love to show you how.

Don’t forget: “No” is a complete sentence.

Asked to join a committee that doesn’t interest you? To commit to a project that doesn’t align with your goals? To take on extra responsibilities when you’re already over-worked?

No explanations or excuses needed; flex the power of your “no”.

Due to not wanting to, I will not be.

I almost never interrupt my clients during coaching sessions.

But I have (PROUDLY!) interrupted two clients in the past week – both times, to create a pause so that we could recognize and celebrate.

My first client casually mentioned that she’d seen 45 patients in the previous 3 days and had all of her encounters closed already.

This is huge. And it deserves to be celebrated.

The second client was telling me about the current mix of responsibilities in her academic job and described it as “lucky” that she had protected time to work on projects that she is passionate about. Before she could continue, I interrupted to point out a well-deserved celebration – luck didn’t create her current job – SHE created it!

So often, as we move quickly from one goal to the next, we forget to pause and celebrate.

But celebration is key – it builds a sense of accomplishment and a positive mindset, and allows us space to rest and reflect.

Take time today to celebrate.

I just got off a call with my coach, where we uncovered some beliefs that I have believed about making mistakes – that I am not a person who makes mistakes, that making mistakes (or even considering that one might make a mistake) is dangerous.

This fear of mistakes shows up in so many ways – in my tendency to plan (if I make a really good plan, mistakes won’t happen, right? 😉), in my love of rules and in the comfort I feel when I (and those around me) follow those rules, and in my tendency to overthink and second guess.

SUCH helpful information to see.

Because I also see the magic in mistakes. And the magic in being someone who is willing to try new things and risk making a mistake.

If fact, this passage from “The Phantom Tollbooth” resonated with me so strongly last week that I took a picture of it (because highlighting your kid’s elementary school library book is definitely NOT following the rules…):

“You must never feel badly about making mistakes,” explained Reason quietly, “as long as you take the trouble to learn from them. For you often learn more by being wrong for the right reasons than you do by being right for the wrong reasons.”

What is your relationship to mistakes? Where is the fear of making a mistake holding you back?

Last night, we somehow found ourselves with homework and dishes and laundry and email replies feeling complete just after dinner. Our evening was unhurried & cozy. The kids & I ended up in my bed, reading.

My 8 year old just finished reading Norton Juster's classic, "The Phantom Tollbooth" - he loved it so much that I decided to re-read it for the first time in probably 35 years.

My friends, that book is packed full of gems.

"But why do only unimportant things?" asked Milo, who suddenly remembered how much time he spent each day doing them.

"Think of all the trouble it saves," the man explained... "If you only do the easy and useless jobs, you'll never have to worry about the important ones which are so difficult. You won't have the time. For there's always something to do to keep you from what you really should be doing."

So grateful that the universe brought me that passage last night, while I was intentionally putting aside some "easy & useless tasks" (more email replies! Social media scrolling!) and instead doing what I really should be doing - resting, connecting, sharing.

What may be keeping you from doing what you really should be doing?

At our last session, my coach asked me this question:

"Is this one of those times when you need to give up something GOOD in order to build something GREAT?"

Wow. Change is hard. It is exciting and scary.

And sometimes you need to do just that - be willing to give up something good in order to create the space to build something great.

I absolutely cherish client feedback like this.

I work with my coach every week because I see the incredible value in having an unbiased perspective to help ME see what matters most.

I am honored to provide the same perspective for my clients.

Did you know?

Research shows that you're more likely to achieve your goals if you share them with someone whose opinion you value.

My challenge to you -

Share one of your goals. Today. Tell a trusted friend, colleague, coach, therapist, or family member about something you want to achieve.

I can't wait to see what you create.

Instead of a traditional New Year's resolution, I like to set a word for the year.

My word for 2024 is "connect".

2024 will be focused on building and deepening connection - with my family, my community, my colleagues, and other physicians . But also with my own intuition, strength, creativity, and dreams.

I can't wait to see what 2024 holds.

Do you have a word for 2024?
