I am hearing from some medical professionals that symptoms mimicking an ear infection are frequently the earliest symptoms of the latest covid variant. Just wanted to pass that along.

“Given the short time they had to develop the shot, however, the data only included information on the safety and efficacy of the booster in animals. Human studies are planned and will be ongoing even if the FDA and CDC decide to authorize the shots and the government starts distributing them. The FDA has also decided to review the animal study data without consulting its advisory committee again.”

The FDA is considering whether to authorize the first Omicron-specific booster shots, based on animal data

Hey, everyone. Just wanted to let you all know that the Alabama Department of Public Health will only be updating the dashboard once a week now (on Thursdays). I think it’s pretty obvious that this virus will always be around on some level.

The ADPH seems to think so, too, as evidenced by this statement on the covid dashboard: “As Alabama moves to the next chapter, the ADPH is shifting strategies from emergency response to one that minimizes daily disruptions to our lives.”

I encourage you to make covid-based decisions depending upon your personal level of risk. I hope you are all doing well.

Hello, friends. Just a short update.

1. We are seeing a very small uptick in cases as compared to March and April, but at this time it’s nothing too concerning.

2. The percentage of positive tests in Colbert Co in the last seven days averages 20% (which is second highest in AL): 145 tests/29 positive. Not terribly high raw case numbers.

3. The percentage of positive tests in Lawrence Co averages 17.6. Also a high number relatively speaking (third highest in AL): 74 tests/13 positive. Again, not high raw numbers but worth mentioning.

Be aware that the virus is still circulating, and let that guide your behavior based upon your risk level. Remember that we had a summer surge last year that began in June.

The hope among experts is that after omicron came through our area and infected droves of people this winter, a significant number of people would have some natural immunity to the omicron sub variants.

Again, if you are in an elevated or high risk group, use this information to guide your behavior.

Stay well.

Good morning! I thought some of you might enjoy this.

Good morning! I thought some of you might enjoy this.

My dad has bees. Today I went to his house and he showed me all of the honey he had gotten from the hives. He took the lid off of a 5 gallon bucket full of honey and on top of the honey there were 3 little bees, struggling. They were covered in sticky honey and drowning. I asked him if we could help them and he said he was sure they wouldn't survive. Casualties of honey collection I suppose.

I asked him again if we could at least get them out and kill them quickly, after all he was the one who taught me to put a suffering animal (or bug) out of its misery. He finally conceded and scooped the bees out of the bucket. He put them in an empty Chobani yogurt container and put the plastic container outside.

Because he had disrupted the hive with the earlier honey collection, there were bees flying all over outside.

We put the 3 little bees in the container on a bench and left them to their fate. My dad called me out a little while later to show me what was happening. These three little bees were surrounded by all of their sisters (all of the bees are females) and they were cleaning the sticky nearly dead bees, helping them to get all of the honey off of their bodies. We came back a short time later and there was only one little bee left in the container. She was still being tended to by her sisters.

When it was time for me to leave we checked one last time and all three of the bees had been cleaned off enough to fly away and the container was empty.
Those three little bees lived because they were surrounded by family and friends who would not give up on them, family and friends who refused to let them drown in their own stickiness and resolved to help until the last little bee could be set free.

Bee Sisters. Bee Peers. Bee Teammates.

We could all learn a thing or two from these bees.

Bee kind always.~

Greetings, everyone! Hope you all are enjoying your spring. I just wanted to stop by briefly and mention this story I saw today. It’s something to be aware of and to keep an eye on.

With this being the last day of the month plus having now had several days in a row of low case numbers, this will be my final daily update unless/until the next surge. As always, I’ll be monitoring case transmission.
